Winter School "The European Convention of Human Rights"

Bologna University announces opening of its winter course “The European Convention of Human Rights: mechanism of protection and rights of migrants”, which will take place in January 2011.

The course aims to focus on two topics:
1. the functioning mechanism of the European Convention of Human Rights (submission of an application, conditions of admissibility, Court’s evaluation, judgments’ effects, surveillance mechanism on judgments’ implementation)
2. The role of the ECtHR on the protection of migrants and of people without a nationality.

Eligibility. Priority will be given to students and practitioners, who have alternatively: a first level degree/ a degree attesting a study programme of at least 3 years/ CV certifying a specific background on human rights plus listening ability  in French and English. The course capacity is 30-50 people.

Liberty Camp: Sulejów, Poland, September 2010

Language of Liberty Institute and the Polish-American Foundation for Economic Research and Education invite you to apply for the Liberty Camp in Poland. The camp will take place on September, 13-19, 2010 at a lovely riverside resort campground by the village of Sulejów in central Poland, between Warsaw and Kraków. This is a joint venture between the Language of Liberty Institute (LLI) and the Polish-American Foundation for Economic Research and Education (PAFERE).

At the camp, 30-40 young people will gather to participate in lectures and discussions about classical liberal philosophy, economics, and entrepreneurship, along with debates, workshops, and videos. In the workshops, students will practice starting a business, writing plans, and giving presentations. The entire program is conducted in English.

There are still several places open, and we would like to have some students from outside Poland. Students should be typically 20-25 years old, but we welcome people of all ages.

The participation fee is 150 Euro, which covers 6 nights accommodation (shared  room) plus all food and study materials. If you register by August 18, you will get a discounted price of 135 Euro.

PhD Scholarships at the University of Milan

The Graduate School in Social, Economic and Political Sciences (GSSEPS) of the University of Milan is now inviting applications from qualified candidates for its three-year PhD programme.

The Graduate School in Social, Economic and Political Sciences of the University of Milan offers five Ph.D. programs: Business History and Management, Economics, Labour Studies Political Studies and Sociology. Each program focuses primarily on advanced training in the respective discipline to enable students to master the dominant paradigms, research methods and essential literature. In addition, the Graduate School provides an opportunity for cross-disciplinary training in approaches and methods. The objective is to teach graduate students to combine the rigorous use of their disciplinary tool kit with knowledge of the tool kits of adjacent disciplines.

First year students of the four doctorates share the same working environment at the Graduate School. Second and third year students will work in close contact with their supervisor in the research departments partners of the School. Admission is open to candidates from all countries. A good knowledge of English is required. Several scholarships are available for EU citizens and non-EU citizens. 

The following programs are offered this year: 
- Ph.D. in Business History and Management - 4 students will be admitted to this Ph.D. program, 2 of these with a scholarship;
- Ph.D. in Economics - 10 students will be admitted to this Ph.D. program, 5 of these with a scholarship;

Globalizing Eurasia? Impacts on the Region and the World (USA)

The Eurasia Program of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC), in partnership with Harvard University's Kathryn W. and Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies, invites applications for a three-day interdisciplinary dissertation development workshop for doctoral students. The workshop will take place on October 5-7, 2010. 

What factors affect Eurasia and its relationship with the world? The conceptual frameworks associated with globalization invite questions concerning the importance of social and cultural place, the definitions of geographic and conceptual regions, and the nature of national economic institutions, environmental issues, and political identities. To what extent can the conceptual frameworks of globalization enhance our understanding of Eurasia? How can the varied and complex experiences of Eurasia challenge and expand our understanding of globalization?

This dissertation development workshop will convene junior scholars interested in these questions for an intensive workshop led by a group of interdisciplinary senior scholars. The workshop will bring together PhD candidates from across the social science disciplines.

We welcome work ranging from interpretive categories (e.g., empire, state, ethnicity, modernity or authoritarianism) to transnational processes (for example, development, trade, migration, health, terrorism, languages or Diasporas).

Following a workshop format, the meeting will provide opportunities to discuss ideas and research plans, solicit feedback from fellow dissertators and nationally known resource faculty, and enhance scholarly networks and contacts.

Funding is provided by the United States Department of State, Program for Research and Training for Eastern Europe and the Independent States of the Former Soviet Union (Title VIII).

Young Women’s Dialogue in Tbilisi, Georgia

On October 19 and 20, 2010, AWID is convening a regional meeting for young women from the SEE/CEE/CIS region on the topic of resource mobilization and movement building for women’s rights organizations.

The purpose of the dialogue is to provide participants with the opportunity to:

  • Explore key challenges in relation to movement building faced by young women in the region;
  • Consider the resource needs of young women working for women’s rights in the region, how these needs are currently being met, and how to fill any gaps;
  • Gain new knowledge about resource mobilization;
  • Build networks with young women’s rights activists; &
  • Work collaboratively to design strategies for supporting regional young feminist activism.

Participant Criteria:
  • Young women active on gender equality whether as organizational staff or volunteers or as independent activists in one or more of the following countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia

1. Piercamillo Falasca graduated in Economics & Political Science in 2003 at Bocconi University in Milan. In 2005/2006 he a...ttended a Master’s Degree in Public Policy at Luiss University in Rome. From 2006 he is a consultant for the main center-right party in Italy. From 2007 Falasca is a fellow of Istituto Bruno Leoni (IBL), a pro-market think tank based in Milan, for which Falasca is mainly focused on fiscal and institutional issues, market liberalization, welfare and job market. In 2009, with Benedetto Della Vedova (Italian MP and former MEP) and others, Falasca founded Libertiamo, a libertarian political association aimed to promote a public debate on individual and economic freedom. He writes on several national newspapers and webmagazines. He also wrote “Fiscal federalism to save South of Italy” (with Carlo Lottieri, Rubbettino Editore 2008) and edited “After – As we can restart after crisis” (IBL Libri, 2009).
2. Dr Krassen Stanchev is the Executive Director of the Institute for Market Economics (since 1993) (website: www.ime-bg.org ), former member of parliament, one of the most quoted Bulgarian observers, best individual country analyst award for 1996 by Euromoney and a nominee for Bulgaria’s Mr. Ekonomika 2004. He was, in 1995, an initiator of the Balkan Network and the European Emerging Economies Network, and has a rich experience in the region (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, and Serbia and Montenegro), Central Europe and the FSU.

Winter School „Time and Temporality: Categories, Models and Narratives“

Winter school "Time and Temporality: Categories, Models and Narratives" - a degree course co-sponsored by the Estonian Graduate School of Culture Studies and Arts (GSCSA) and the Centre of Excellence in Cultural Theory (CECT) will take place at the University of Tartu, Estonia, on January 31, 2010 - February 6, 2011. Participants will be awarded 5-9 ECTS credits.

The first winter school of the Estonian Graduate School of Culture Studies and Arts focuses on time and its conceptualization, the categories and typologies applied. Time is a theme that unites individual experience, social dynamics, research fields and disciplinary histories. Temporality represents an aspect common to all research and a concept that provides an opportunity to look for inter- and transdisciplinary connections.

The programme of the winter school consists of: 1) joint interdisciplinary lectures and seminars conducted by Estonian and guest lecturers; 2) two days of specialized workshops outside the customary classroom environment; 3) student workshops where graduate participants present and discuss their own research.

For students the connecting question for the subtopics of the winter school and a starting point for their essay is “The treatment of time and temporality in my research”. Interpretation of this subject may emanate from specific questions about their research and its conceptual field of time/temporality, or include aspects of disciplinary history.

Students are expected to do preparatory reading in order to participate in the seminars and to present their research during student workshops. The final assignment of the course is an essay (3000 words, by March 14, 2011). Upon full participation in the study programme and completion of the essay students will be awarded 9 ECTS points (5 ECTS without an essay). The essay will be considered for publication.

Summer School "Energy, Security and Cultural Dialogue"

The first edition of the International Summer School "Energy, Security and Cultural Dialogue" will take place on 29 August - 5 September 2010 in Iasi, Romania. The Summer School will include lectures, discussions, workshops on environmental issues of European security and international efforts on EU policies regarding energy, challenges generated by diversity in global context and many other issues on the international agenda. Classes will be held by internationally renowned specialists, ministers, parliamentarians and university lecturers.

This international summer school is open to 30 students, master graduates, doctoral candidates, researchers, young professionals from Romania, Moldova, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Georgia, Albania and Serbia and other Western Balkan states. We seek active people, open and creative. The working language will be English, so a good command of English is essential.

European Institutes for Advanced Study Fellowship Programme

The European Institutes for Advanced Study (EURIAS) Fellowship Programme is an international researcher mobility programme offering 33 fellowships for the 2011/2012 academic year. It proposes 10-month residencies in one of the 14 participating Institutes: Berlin, Bologna, Brussels, Bucharest, Budapest, Cambridge, Helsinki, Jerusalem, Lyons, Nantes, Paris, Uppsala, Vienna, Wassenaar. The Programme builds on the strong reputation of the Institutes for Advanced Study for promoting the concentrated, self-directed work of excellent researchers within the stimulating environment of a multidisciplinary and international group of fellows.

EURIAS Fellowships are mainly offered in the fields of the humanities and social sciences but may also be granted to scholars in natural and exact sciences, if their proposed research project does not require laboratory facilities. The diversity of the 14 participating IAS - which have agreed on a common selection procedure - offers a wide range of possible research contexts in Europe for worldwide scholars. Applicants select up to three IAS outside their country of nationality or residence as possible host institutions.

The Programme welcomes applications worldwide from promising scholars at an early stage of their careers as well as from established senior researchers.

Application assessment

The selection of applicants who are eligible for a fellowship is competitive, merit-based and conducted through an internationally independent and recognised peer review process.

The EURIAS Fellowship Programme undertakes a detailed qualitative assessment according to the following criteria:
– Scientific excellence of the applicant
– Quality of the proposal (innovative, path-breaking, high-impact)
– Ability to carry out the research proposal
– Theoretical and methodological framework of the research proposal
– Impact beyond intra-disciplinary specialisations
– Interdisciplinary potential of the research proposal
– Significance of the research proposal for the international academic community
– Relevance of a residency in an Institute for Advanced Study for the research project
– Expected impact of the fellowship on training and career development
– Proven language capacity (most IAS operate in an English-language environment, but research can be conducted in any language, and language diversity is welcome).

Workshop for Young Journalists: “The Journalist: an Endangered Species?”

Why has the number of journalists in Brussels dropped from 1,300 to 752 in the past five years? How can we ensure that there is adequate media presence monitoring the work of politicians across the EU? And just how are the financial crisis and increasingly advanced technology affecting European journalists?

If these are questions that interest you then we invite you to apply to become one of the 50 young journalists, reporting from inside the European Parliament in Brussels on 12 - 14 October 2010.

Participants will experience three days of creativity and innovation through political discussions, hands-on media workshops and invaluable insights into the European Parliament, European media and the so-called ‘Brussels bubble’ itself! They will interact with high-level European politicians, professional journalists and experts and engage in intercultural exchange through practical work and evening cultural activities.

Over the course of the three-day workshop, each journalist will each produce a report on the topic of the seminar through their medium of choice - audio, video, print, online or photography.

Then prepare yourself to report from Brussels on the most important question facing young journalists – are we an endangered species?

The call is open to young journalists that are citizens or legal residents of an EU country, aged between 18 and 30. Travel will be reimbursed by the European Parliament. Please note that in order to receive a lump sum covering your accommodation and meals you need to provide a copy of your press card or a letter from the editor stating that you work as a journalist. Journalism students and interns need to provide a letter from their university or from the organisation they are interning at.

The workshop for young journalists is organised by the European Parliament with the support of the European Youth Press.

Mexican Government Scholarship Program 2011

The scholarships are granted for specialization, Master’s, Ph.D., and medical specialization courses as well as for postgraduate-level research, postdoctoral stays, postgraduate mobility programs, artistic creation residences, high-level conferences, residences for Mexicanist researchers, residences for media collaborators, and special chairs for visiting professors.

Scholarships are not granted for preparatory courses; distance, open learning courses; and direct doctorates (programs that comprise M.A. + Ph.D.)

The scholarships are open only for the programs, institutions and hospitals listed in this Call. Scholarships are not offered for dentistry, plastic surgery, marketing, accounting, advertising, and business management.

Scholarships are awarded on a yearly basis for a duration of up to:
  • 1 year for specialization studies
  • 2 years for M.A. studies
  • 3 years for Ph.D. studies
  • 3 years for medical specialties and subspecialties
  • 1 to 12 months for postgraduate research and postdoctoral stays
  • 3 to 5 months for postgraduate mobility programs
Applicants’ Profile

Preference will be given to candidates that:
  • Further studies on prioritary subjects for the development of their country.
  • Work in particularly important areas for their country’s’ institutional development.
  • Study postgraduate courses that are not offered in their country.
  • Carry out studies or research in institutions located in the states of the Mexican Republic.
  • Hold faculty or research positions at public higher education institutions or scientific research centers in their country.
  • Are public officials in charge of areas or programs of special interest for their country.
  • Work at human, social, or economic development programs focusing on marginalized groups or at socially or economically depressed regions.
General Requirements
  • Submitting the corresponding application (A or B) within the application deadlines.
  • Having an official Government candidacy endorsement as part of application A.
  • Holding a bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. degree as required by the degree program for which the scholarship is requested.
  • Having a minimum cumulative grade average of 8 on a scale of 0-10, if a different scale is used, it is essential to submit its equivalency.
  • Receiving academic acceptance from the host Mexican institution
  • Spanish. If Spanish is not the applicant’s native language, proof of advanced knowledge of Spanish issued by a university or language learning center must be attached.
  • Meeting the requirements set forth in this Call. Incomplete filings or original documents will not be received.
  • For postgraduate mobility scholarships, an academic acceptance letter of the host institution must be provided together with a communication from the applicant’s institution acknowledging completion of educational credits.
  • This Call is not open for residents of Mexico, foreign diplomats recognized in our country or their relatives, or individuals holding a dual citizenship by naturalization.
  • The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) does not receive original documents except for medical certificates.
Application Submission

All scholarship applications will be submitted to the Mexican embassy or concurrent embassy for the applicant’s country through that country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs or Education and/or the government institution appointed for such end. All “A” applications require a candidacy endorsement signature from the applicant’s government since it is an inter-governmental offer. Such signature is essential for the application to be considered. 

The applications must be submitted to the Mexican embassies between June 21 and October 15, 2010. Copies of the documents must be authenticated and a postille-stamped when required by the host institution as a condition to accept the applicant.
