Viadrina Summer University 2012 - The Culture of Football: Passion, Power, Politics

Football is not only the most popular sport in many regions of the world but also a social, political and cultural mass phenomenon. In light of the European Football Championship 2012 (in Poland and the Ukraine), the long-standing Viadrina Summer University dedicates an intensive program to the cultural and social scientific exploration of this phenomenon. To what extent does football mirror social and cultural developments of modern societies? Which interdependencies exist between football and politics? Which identities – competing or converging ones – are represented by football? And which roles do language, media, rituals play in all this? These questions shall be pursued in a German-Polish project at Viadrina University and its Polish partner institution, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. The main coursework of Viadrina Summer University will be carried by Viadrina faculty representing sociological and political science as well as historical, economic and linguistic approaches. In addition, lectures and seminars will be offered by academics of other German and European as well as American universities.

Who can participate?

Viadrina Summer University welcomes advanced students and young researchers from the social sciences, modern European history, linguistics and communication studies, as well as economics. Applications from candidates who already hold a first degree and/or have specialized in issues related to the program will receive preferential treatment. Full-time attendance of the Summer University is obligatory for all participants. Students are expected to contribute actively to the Summer University by making short presentations and submitting research essays. Proficiency in English is required as all parts of the program will be taught in English.

Teaching and Syllabus

The Summer University combines lectures, seminar discussions, excursions and student presentations. For our international participants there is a German language course offered every day for one hour and all levels. Details on the course program, reading requirements and syllabus are available in advance on the Summer University’s website.

Certificate

The Viadrina Summer University Certificate requires active participation in one core course, two seminars, one workshop, three lectures and one excursion. Participants who wish to transfer their credit points to their home universities are expected to deliver a research paper and to make an in-class oral presentation. Students are entitled to earn up to 18 ECTS points. This requires participation of 45 lecture-/seminar-hours and a research paper.

Course fees and fellowships

The registration fee of 250 Euros includes tuition, course materials and other costs related to the course program. The Summer University offers 25 fellowships provided by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Foreign Office for foreign participants. Fellowships cover tuition, accommodation, travelling costs and a lump sum of 200 Euro towards meals and living costs. Travelling costs will be reimbursed according to the regulations of the DAAD.

The Summer University is open to a limited number of regular Viadrina students (see university calendar summer term, faculty for social and cultural sciences M.A.-part). The fee is also 250 Euro for EUV-students.

Accommodation

Participants are invited to stay in modern student apartments with single rooms and modern facilities in Słubice, Poland. The price of a single room per person for 19 nights will be around 120 Euro. Grocery stores, supermarkets and restaurants are all to be found within walking distance.

EVS Volunteering in Belgium 2012-2013

The European AIDS Treatment Group (EATG) is looking for a volunteer to support us with our communication work towards people living with HIV/AIDS and other stakeholders. The volunteers would be involved in projects to raise awareness about HIV in Europe, mainly among young communities.

EATG is a large network of activists; we regularly receive suggestions from our members for new projects and initiatives. Our members are activists that advocate for best access to HIV prevention, treatment and care across Europe. We develop projects for universal access to HIV medicines and prevention.

Volunteers would help us in our daily tasks; and collaborate and learn with our network of members and partners.

Our target group is people living with HIV and their supporters. The volunteers would work in a young and friendly environment in our office in Brussels and would be in contact with the HIV community in Europe on a daily basis (through contact with our members and partners in different European countries). Furthermore, the volunteer would be in contact with the public health community in Brussels and the main policy makers.

The volunteers would participate in actions in different European countries targeted at the most at risk groups for HIV transmission. E.g. projects aiming to decrease stigma and discrimination; developing strategies for testing of young people and early diagnosis of HIV; raising awareness and developing knowledge of young people on HIV related issues, as well as sexual health and other sexual transmitted diseases; disseminating information about European actitivites for HIV prevention.

EATG works with the most vulnerable populations to HIV transmission (migrants, drug users, sex workers, men having sex with men). We are often confronted by issues of stigma and discrimination and inequalities in different health systems across Europe, and our work aims to tackle these inequalities.

The scope of our work in the European region, however, our activities focus in Eastern Europe, where the HIV prevalence is higher then in other European countries.We consider the project environment challenging, as the volunteer would work with us mainly on HIV prevention among most vulnerable groups in Europe and namely in Eastern Europe.

Tasks

- Organisation of events, including trainings: logistic support, communication with participants and follow up. (e.g. attending workshops on HIV treatment and prevention in different countries; participating in AIDS conferences and supporting us with our exhbition/booths in conferences; organising actions and demonstrations related to HIV prevention and treatment)

- Contributing to small projects on HIV prevention, treatment and care. (e.g. AIDS&Mobility, project that aims to develop mediator training among young migrant communities in Europe; COPE Continuous Patient Education, a mechanism to fund local organisation to translate and adapt publications about HIV and sexual transmitted diseases into different languages)

- Support implementation of EATG communication strategy (e.g. development of members relations, drafting articles and editing the newsletter, updating website, organisation of our library and databases, updating Facebook and Twitter page with main HIV news).

- Other: drafting documents and performing small translations; support dissemination of information and media relations; representing the organisation in events.

- Development of a project for the youth HIV community in Europe with impact at national scale.

Procedure

The EATG would like to cooperate with organisations working on anti-discrimination, equal opportunities, health and youth information. We are looking for volunteers with a strong interest on HIV/AIDS issues, or with a strong interest in learning more about HIV. Young people living with HIV and/or volunteers from different backgrounds and part of migrant or other communities vulnerable to HIV transmission are encouraged to apply, however, the most important would be to host someone willing to work with HIV positive people and learn about HIV treatment, independently of his/her background. The selection is based on the motivation to develop projects on HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care and to further disseminate information to his/her youth community back home.

All our documents are written in English but our staff speak French and we would communicate in French and/or English.

Oslo International Summer School 2012

The International Summer School (ISS) at the University of Oslo, Norway, yearly offers intensive Master's and Bachelor's courses over six weeks in summer. We will welcome more than 550 students from nearly 100 countries from 23 June to 3 August 2012. The deadline for this year scholarship applications is 1 February, 2012. Self-paying applicants can apply after this date.

The ISS is a learning community of diverse students who come together to study, interact and increase understanding and good will between nations. It aims at developing and conveying knowledge and at promoting understanding between people from different cultures. This dual purpose is reflected in the ISS motto: “Six Weeks of Academic Achievement and International Good Will”.

Many applicants will find that they are academically qualified to attend ISS, but they will not meet the requirements set by the scholarship donors. Many scholarship applicants are academically qualified to attend the ISS, but they do not meet the requirements for a scholarship. As a result, the application will be rejected.

To be a successful scholarship candidate you will need to demonstrate:

that your academic background is related to the course you wish to take;
that your professional background/goals are related to the course you wish to take;
financial need;
personal qualities that make you a good representative of your country.

Competition for scholarships is high. Many scholarship applicants are rejected in the Pre-Application phase. At this point, the applicant can switch the status to "self-paying" or "sponsored" and try to find the funding from a source outside the ISS.

Required supporting documents

Many applications are delayed or rejected because candidates fail to send certified copies of their academic credentials. A certified copy means you must take your documents to a public official or notary. The official must make the copies, stamp the papers and sign them, attesting to their validity. Certified copies can be made at a university registrar, police office, public notary, bank or post office. We do NOT accept a photocopy or a scan of a document that has a stamp or seal.

Include the following:

1. Application form

The application form is available only through the Pre-Application form. Filling out the Pre-Application form is the first step in the application process.

The ISS will send the application form by email as a pdf file. Download and print the application form. Some fields are already filled in with information from your Pre-Application form. Be sure to complete the rest of the fields by hand. Please review the information and make any corrections directly on the application in pen. Remember to sign and date the form!

2. Two passport-sized photos

Write your name on the reverse side of the photographs. The photographs should be of good quality.

3. ISS scholarship form (only for scholarship applicants)

Scholarship application forms are available only through the Pre-Application form. Print out the form and follow the instructions given. Remember that your reference person cannot be related to you and s/he must also stamp and sign the form.

4. Statement of purpose

Your statement of purpose should be one page, typed, double spaced (max. 500 words). Tell us why the course is important to you, how it helps you fulfill future goals or how it relates to your current studies or employment. Briefly state your personal qualities that make you a good representative of your country.

Applicants for Norwegian levels III and IV should write their statement in Norwegian. The statement of purpose is a particularly important basis for selecting applicants for scholarships.

5. Letters of recommendation

You should submit two letters of recommendation from two different people who are not related to you by blood or marriage. The referee should give information regarding your character, intellectual ability, and seriousness of purpose. The letter should be written on official letterhead and must include contact information for the reference person. At least one letter should come from your professor, lecturer, headmaster, or if employed, from your current employer.

We rely heavily on the letters of recommendation when considering candidates for Master's courses and for scholarships.

Exceptions: If you live in Norway and are applying for Norwegian language courses, you do not need to submit the letters of recommendation.

6. English documentation

All applicants must submit certified copies (stamped and signed by a public official) of their test scores or exams. If you submit a statement from a professor or employer, we prefer the statement to be written on official letterhead. Native English speakers from the USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand do not need to document their English skills. .

7. Norwegian documentation

Applicants to Norwegian language levels II, III or IV must submit certified copies (stamped and signed by a public official) of transcripts or test scores of previous Norwegian courses or exams (i.e. Bergenstest). Recommendations from a teacher or employer must be written on official letterhead.

8. Certified copies of transcripts/diplomas

You must submit a certified copy of your academic credentials (transcripts, diplomas, etc.) or have official credentials sent directly from the bursars of the issuing school/university.

If your documents are not in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Norwegian, Swedish or Danish, they must be translated into one of these languages – preferably Norwegian or English – by an official translator who must sign and stamp the original and the translation. You must submit BOTH the certified transcripts and the translations.

9. CV or resume (Master-level applicants and scholarship applicants)

We require a CV/resume from all candidates applying for Master-level courses and from all scholarship applicants. Otherwise, this is optional.

10. Copy of passport

Applicants must submit the pages of their passport showing personal data and photo. Applicants residing in EU countries may submit a copy of their National Identity Card instead of a passport.

If you reside in Norway, you must submit both a copy of a valid residence permit (oppholdstillatelse) and a copy of the pages of your passport showing personal data and photo.

11. Receipt for payment of the application fee

No application is complete until the application fee is paid in full. Some scholarship applicants are exempted from the application fee.

Winter University Course on Negotiation, Professional Relationship, and Protocols will be held on February 16-22, 2012 in Kosovo. This course will develop your understanding of the principles, strategies, and tactics of effective negotiation and professional relationship management. You will also increase awareness and understanding of ethical principles and stakeholder considerations that influence the choices offered and made in transactions and relationships. You will learn to identify and assess the variables in negotiations, develop sound negotiation planning techniques, develop an understanding of various strategies and tactics to use as you ethically resolve conflicts, transactional and interpersonal differences. Learn how to use that knowledge to execute effective dispute resolutions, and improved competence to manage professional relationships. The course methodology is highly participative and utilizes class discussion, assigned readings, and simulations in one-on-one, fishbowl, and group situations.

Course Overview

This course is designed to help you better understand the theory, processes, and practices of negotiation, conflict resolution and relationship management so that you can be a more effective negotiator in a wide variety of situations. If you take advantage of the opportunities this course offers, you will be comfortable and more productive managing negotiations as well as professional and personal relationships. You will develop an understanding of the principles, strategies, and tactics of effective negotiation, conflict resolution, and relationship management, and enhance your ability to assess the variables in negotiations, the impact of interpersonal styles, personality, and culture. The course treats negotiation, conflict resolution and relationship management as complex processes that require the successful practitioner to develop and use a unique blend of perceptual, persuasive, analytical, and interpersonal skills. After each exercise, we will discuss what happened and why it happened so that you will develop understanding as well as factual knowledge.

Ljubljana Summer School - Take the Best from East & West 2012

Applications are now open for the 2012 edition of the international summer school Take the Best from East & West held at the Economic Faculty of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. The summer school will take place on 9-27 July 2012.

The Ljubljana Summer School is a three-week programme. It is open to undergraduates, graduate students and recent graduates. Over three exciting and challenging weeks, students attend courses, interact with managers during company visits, discover the local culture and socialise with people from all around the world. Students will be able to choose from among many courses which are academically challenging and intellectually stimulating. Discussions between professors and students through various interactive teaching methods are strongly encouraged. Coming from Slovenia and all over the world, the lecturers are experts in their chosen fields and actively involved in academic research; many act as advisers and consultants to companies and the government.

Courses and ECTS Credits

We offer many courses which are academically challenging and intellectually stimulating. Discussion between professors and students through various interactive teaching methods are strongly encouraged. Lecturers, from Slovenia and all over the world, are experts in their chosen fields and are actively involved in academic research; many act as advisers and consultants to companies and the government.

In line with your home university policy, you can earn ECTS credits if you fulfil all course requirements. Together with ECTS credits you receive a Certificate of Attendance. You may choose one or two courses. The courses will be lectured in the morning or in the afternoon. Number of students per course is limited. Please note that a course will not be offered if fewer than 15 students apply.

Lecturing is in English. There are 10 lecture days of 3 in-class units per course/day. Additionally the study of a 6 ECTS course includes 30 hours of independent study, 15 hours of homework and 15 hours of group work. On the last day the examination takes place.

Accomodation

During Ljubljana Summer School 2012 students will stay in student dormitories near the Faculty of Economics. The accommodation is in twin rooms with shared bathrooms and kitchen with cable internet connection. Students may be sharing a room either with another student (of the same gender) of Ljubljana Summer School or a regular student (of the same gender) of the University of Ljubljana.

Fees

Study fee: EUR 550; includes tuition and study materials for one or two courses, use of the Faculty library, computer rooms, free wireless internet access, some social events and a welcome package.

Hospitality Package: EUR 300; includes accommodation in a twin room with a shared bathroom and kitchen, free cable internet access, breakfast and lunch on weekdays and a city bus ticket.

World Business Dialogue 2012

The “World Business Dialogue” is the world’s largest student-run business convention. Here, 60 top-class personalities from economy, science and politics enter a discussion about economically and socially relevant, future-oriented topics with 300 international students and just as many executives, notably from German companies. For 25 years, Cologne University is converted into a convention centre for the economic elite for two days.

Also known under its former title “Deutscher Wirtschaftskongress”, the World Business Dialogue will once again take place on March 14-15, 2012 for the 15th time. The convention’s organisation is realized by the members of the Organisationsforum Wirtschaftskongress e.V. (OFW), where approximately 40 students are responsible for the project’s success. Furthermore, during the period leading up to the convention, the OfW e.V. is assisted by sponsors and a supporting team of 200 students who allow for the smooth running of the convention.

The World Business Dialogue’s singularity and relevance are supported by a large number of well-known speakers that have participated in past conventions; among these are Josef Ackermann, CEO of Deutsche Bank, Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, and Michael Bloomberg, governing mayor of New York, who made use of the convention as a platform for discussion and exchange and appreciated the student’s commitment. The same is also true for the 300 corporate participants who were and continue to be attracted by a mixture of cross-generational dialogue, deeply founded topics, networking and recruiting.

The differentiation of prices is proportional to the risks taken from us on covering your accommodation expenses and your assured presence in case of being selected. Cooping with immense travel expenses can be an issue for student participants.The convention is able to provide a much higher amount of Dialogue Scholarships, in order to diminish the financial obstacle for participating in the Dialogue. The Dialogue Scholarship covers a student’s travelling expenses from a major airport/train station to Cologne, Düsseldorf or Frankfurt.

You are chosen by a company, which inherits the costs of travelling entirely. In addition to the financial aspect of the Dialogue Scholarship,it is offered a unique networking experience for students and companies involved: students receiving a Dialogue Scholarship are exclusively meeting the company incurring their travelling expenses at a special event hosted at the Dialogue. There are also possibilities of external Dialogue scholarships

In order to qualify for a Dialogue Scholarship it is necessary to interpret the 15th World Business Dialogue’s topic in a creative way by turning in a topic related creative work such as videos, photographs, songs, essays and any kind of creative ideas. Be creative and get your ticket to Cologne for free. The application for a Dialogue Scholarship is processed by applying for the participation in the 15th World Business Dialogue via the Online Application Tool. However, do not forget that your videos, essay etc. are subject to the following restrictions. The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) are designed to promote capacity building within organisations in 61 countries by providing training and education to mid-career staff. The NFP is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the budget for development cooperation.

The overall aim of the NFP is to help alleviate qualitative and quantitative shortages of skilled manpower within a wide range of governmental, private and non-governmental organisations. This is done by offering fellowships to mid-career professionals to improve the capacity of their employing organisations.

The scholarships allow candidates to receive a postgraduate education and to earn a Dutch degree.

NFP sub-programmes

The NFP offers you three sub-programmes to choose from:

PhD studies

In addition, there are separate funds for Alumni Activities.

Fields of Study

The scholarship covers many fields of study including: Agriculture, Forestry & Fisheries; Architecture and Town Planning, Arts and Humanities; Business Administration and Management; Education; Engineering; Environmental Science; Fine and Applied Arts; Law; Mass Communication and Information Science; Mathematics and Computer Science; Medical and Health Science; Natural Science; Tourism and Leisure; Social and Behavioral Science; and Transport and Communications.

Target Groups

Students from 61 developing countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

Scholarship value/inclusions

An NFP fellowship is intended to supplement the salary that the fellowship holder should continue to receive (at least partially) during the study period. The allowance is considered to be a contribution towards the cost of living for one person, whether in the Netherlands or in another country. The fellowship can also cover the costs of tuition fees, visas, travel costs, insurance and thesis research.

Eligibility

To be eligible for an NFP fellowship you must:

be a mid-career professional with at least three years' relevant work experience;
be a national of, and working and living in one of the countries on the NFP country list valid at the time of application;
be nominated by your employer, who pledges to continue paying your salary and guarantees that you will be able to return to the same or an equivalent position at the end of your fellowship period;
have been unconditionally admitted by a Dutch institution to one of the Master’s degree programmes or Short courses on the 2012-2013 course list, or have agreed upon a PhD research proposal with the Dutch institution. This means that you must have met all the academic requirements set by the Dutch institution;
not already have received an NFP fellowship for a master’s degree programme or a PhD fellowship.
not already have received two NFP fellowships for a short course and you must not have already received a fellowship in the year preceding your application.
not be employed by:
- a multinational corporation (e.g. Shell, Unilever, Microsoft);
- a large national and/or commercial organisation;
- a bilateral donor organisation (e.g. USAID, DFID, Danida, Sida, Dutch ministry of Foreign affairs, FinAid, AusAid, ADC, SwissAid);
- a multilateral donor organisation, (e.g. a UN organisation, the World Bank, the IMF, Asian Development Bank, African Development Bank, IADB);
- an international NGO (e.g. Oxfam, Plan, Care).
have completed and submitted an NFP PhD study, master’s degree programme or short course application, including all the required documentation, before the applicable fellowship application deadline;
be employed in an area to which the study will make a relevant contribution;
have a clear-cut, functional relationship with a relevant organisation and be in a position to introduce the newly acquired skills and knowledge into that organisation;
be full-time available for the entire period of the programme or course and be physically and mentally able to take part in the entire programme;
endorse the objective and the aim of the NFP and use your new knowledge and skills to support your employing organisation and your country. Nuffic urges you to return to your home country upon finishing the course or programme to meet the NFP aim in the most effective way.

Priorities

Your chances of obtaining an NFP scholarship go up if you:

live and work in Sub-Saharan Africa;
are a woman;
belong to a priority groups and/or are from a marginalised region as defined by the Dutch embassy in your country. You can find these priorities on the embassy's website.

Application Procedure

As stated above, to be eligible for an NFP fellowship, candidates need to be admitted to the Master’s/PhD programme for which they would like an NFP fellowship. Thus, candidates must first apply for admission directly to the Dutch institution that offers the master’s degree programme of their choice.

For 2012-2013, the deadline for fellowship applications is 7 Februrary or 1 May 2012 depending on the course (see the NFP course list for 2012-2013 to know the specific deadline for your chosen course). The deadline for academic applications is earlier, about 1-2 months earlier than the fellowship applications deadline. Therefore, candidates are strongly advised to start the application procedure for admission as early as possible.

Applications have to be submitted through Scholarships Online (SOL). Through SOL candidates can apply for fellowships online and they can check the status of an application. Other parties such as the Dutch institutions, the embassies and consulates will use SOL to assess NFP fellowship applications. International Study Programmes at the University of Amsterdam

University of Amsterdam, ranked among the top 30 universities in Europe and the top 100 worldwide, has one of the largest numbers of international Master's study programmes of any university in Europe, with over 120 taught in English and several of the courses offered being unique to the UvA. Study programmes at the UvA offer a high level of autonomy. Respect for each individual's opinions and convictions are central in the Netherlands' diverse and plural society.

For 2012-2013, the UvA has a large number of Master's and Research Master's international programmes covering a broad range of disciplines and topics. Regular Master's programmes usually take a year and lead, upon successful completion, to the award of an MSc, MA or LLM degree. Research Master's programmes take two years and prepare candidates to pursue and develop a career in academic research or associated professions.

The minimum entry requirement for Master's programmes is a Bachelor's degree in a related subject or field which is equivalent to a Dutch Bachelor's degree. In addition, students need to demonstrate a sufficient command of English in order to be able to follow lectures, tutorials and course materials. Some programmes have additional entry requirements.

Amsterdam Merit Scholarship

The University provides a limited number of scholarships for excellent students in the selected Master's programmes. The total amount for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship dedicated to the specific faculty is established annually. As the actual number of scholarships is derived from this amount, no fixed number is in place. For the academic year 2011-2012, 20% of students from outside the European Union that started in one of the Master's programme has been awarded a € 12,000 Amsterdam Merit Scholarship.

General Criteria

In order to be considered for the AMS scholarship applicants need to meet the following general criteria:

hold non-EEA nationality or nationalities only
have above average academic results
not be entitled to receive a Dutch study grant or loan ("Studiefinanciering")
not receive a full coverage scholarship for the same period of study as the AMS scholarship
have submitted a complete application to one of the MSc programmes including a sufficient English test score
have been (or will be) admitted to one of the MSc programmes
be able to comply with the conditions to obtain a Dutch visa (if applicable).

Selection procedure

Applicants should write an AMS motivation letter (tell us in not more than 300 words your motivation to get the scholarship).
Applicants should upload the AMS digital motivation letter to their online application for the MSc programme before April 1st 2012.

STEP Beyond Travel Grants

STEP Beyond Travel grants fund up-and-coming artists and cultural workers - with a priority to individuals up to 35 years and/or in the first 10 years of their career - to travel between EU and countries bordering the EU. Since 2003, STEP - which stands for ‘Supporting Travel for European Partnerships’ - Beyond Travel Grants have supported the movement of hundreds of people across European borders by providing between €250 and €700. In 2010, we awarded 159 individual travel grants of between €250 and €700.

Funding mobility and exchange links closely to ECF’s overall objectives and specifically to our European Neighbourhood programme, which currently works with organisations in Moldova, Ukraine and Turkey. Also high on our agenda is support for people and projects in the Arab-Mediterranean regions. We especially welcome applications for STEP Beyond Travel Grants from these regions.

All the activities of the ECF mobility fund are revolved around three strategic guiding principles:

Empowerment of people through art and culture support is given to different communities in Europe to encourage the exchange and empowerment of under-represented groups.
Connecting sources of knowledge sharing and connecting knowledge is vital in creating an open Europe.
Linking policy and practice projects that help build an open Europe by contributing to cultural policy development locally, nationally, regionally and at a European level.

Eligibility

Artists or cultural workers of any contemporary artistic or cultural discipline (individual or representing a cultural or artistic independent organisation);
Based in Europe or in its neighborhood;
Maximum 35 years old.

What countries can you travel to and from?
In order to facilitate the functioning of the fund as well as to reach its aims, the larger pan-European area has been divided in two groups.

Group A: The 27 Member States of the European Union; The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
Group B: In Europe: Western Balkans(Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, (FYROM),Montenegro and Serbia), Belarus, Moldavia, Russia, South Caucasus (Armenia,Azerbaijan and Georgia) Turkey and Ukraine. In the South and East Mediterranean: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya,Morocco, Palestine Territory, Syria and Tunisia.

Types of grants

The STEP beyond offers three types of grants (350, 500 and 700 Euro) based on travel distances and average travel costs. The eligible applications are evaluated by the STEP beyond team during the pre-selection phase, after this assessment ECF decides which proposal it will support. Both awarded and rejected applicants are notified by e-mail around one month after the application submission date.

In case of group travel:

a maximum of three individuals applying for the same event;
group applications need to be submitted by the host organisation.

TEEME Fellowships 2012

The EACEA (The Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency, funders of the programme) will award 8 Fellowships for 2012 entry (Category A: 5; Category B: 3). In addition, all EMJDs are invited to compete for further Category A Fellowships in the Western Balkans/Turkey window.

To be admitted to the programme, candidates must present convincing outlines for research projects that are comparative and interdisciplinary in conception, that bear a clear relation to present needs and debates, and that span at least two different linguistic, religious and/or ethnic cultures within Europe, or that relate one European with one non-European culture, in the period 1400 to 1700, or in later political or cultural uses and representations of early modern literature and history. A project on Shakespeare, for instance, would be expected to look beyond formal or philological questions focused on individual plays and consider instead wider cultural issues, such as the relations between the plays and specific historical, social or intellectual dynamics in Europe and beyond, or perhaps Shakespeare’s impact on European, American, African or Asian cultures.

Eligibility Criteria

Category A Fellowships: These Fellowships are awarded to doctoral candidates who come from a country other than an EU member state or associated countries and who are neither residents nor have carried out their main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in the EU. The only exception to this rule applies to doctoral candidates who have previously received an Erasmus Mundus masters scholarship in order to follow an EMMC - such students are eligible under this Category. (Note: 'EU member state or associated countries', for the purposes of this Category, includes all EU member states, the EEA-EFTA states Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland, plus Turkey, Switzerland, and the Western Balkan countries: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia).

Category B Fellowships: These Fellowships are awarded to doctoral candidates who do not fulfil the Category A criteria listed above. Candidates from the EU will have to apply under this category.

Western Balkan/Turkey window: There may be one or more additional Category A Fellowship available for candidates from Turkey or the Western Balkan countries (Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia).

All Erasmus Mundus Fellowship holders on the TEEME programme will benefit from Fellowship contracts covering monthly allowance, holidays, parental leave, social security and pension rights. Health insurance will be provided free of charge by the consortium for all doctoral candidates on the programme.

Details of the Fellowship contracts, including the amount of the monthly allowance, will be available soon. Fellowship holders can expect a monthly net contribution towards their living expenses of c. 2000€.

Other funding options

Candidates will be eligible to apply for targeted research grants as well as partially or fully funded studentships other than Erasmus Mundus at all four partner universities. Specifically, Kent offers a number of PhD studentships each year in all participating departments to both EU and overseas candidates and supports all research students with a minimum allowance for research expenses each year; the Dahlem Research School at FU Berlin offers a range of travel and mobility grants, as well as start-up and completion scholarships to postgraduate students, both EU and international; Porto participates in a variety of national funding schemes to which researchers can apply for small research grants, short-term scholarships and travel expenses; and at Prague students will be able to apply for the grants offered by the Charles University Foundation (GAUK). In addition, students will receive support and guidance to apply for any further funding for which they may be eligible in their home countries.

Fees

You do not need to hold an Erasmus Mundus Fellowship to study on TEEME. Applicants who have been offered a place on the programme but were not awarded a Fellowship will have to cover the programme fees (5,000€ p.a. for EU students and 8,000€ p.a. for third-country students) through other means. Erasmus Mundus Fellowship holders do not have to pay these fees as they are included in their EU grant.

Weidenfeld Scholarships and Leadership Programme, University of Oxford

The Weidenfeld Scholarships and Leadership Programme cultivates the leaders of tomorrow from transition and emerging economies by providing outstanding university graduates and young professionals with the opportunity to pursue fully funded graduate studies at the University of Oxford and access to a comprehensive programme of leadership development, long-term mentoring and networking.

Overall, the programme provides Scholars with the knowledge, skills and international networks necessary to contribute optimally to public life in their countries and regions of origin and to build lasting professional linkages across cultures and continents.

The Weidenfeld Leadership Programme includes:

an annual ten day long Leadership and Public Policy Seminar including conferences, moderated discussions and workshops on political philosophy and leadership development;
practical skills training in public speaking, conflict management and decision making;
an annual European Study Tour;
engagement in the Institute’s projects and conferences;
an annual Weidenfeld Debate;
a public policy analysis training for a selected group of Scholars long-term professional mentoring; and
a myriad of networking opportunities throughout the year.

The programme is managed by the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD). This scholarship is open to candidates studying for all degree bearing courses, with the exception of PGCert and PGDip courses.

What does it cover?

100% of university and college fees, and a grant for living costs (the rate in 2011-12 was £13,500).

Awards are made for the full duration of a student's fee liability for the agreed course. If your scholarship is offered for a course lasting more than one year, the continuation of your scholarship each year is subject to an annual renewal process based on satisfactory academic progress.

How do I apply?

Apply at the same time as you apply to Oxford by selecting Weidenfeld Scholarships and Leadership Programme in the Funding Section of the University's Graduate Application Form. Candidates should apply by Application Deadline 2 (6 January 2012 for Medical Sciences and Philosophy; 20 January 2012 for all other subjects).

In order to be considered for this scholarship, you must submit your application for graduate study by the January deadline (20 January 2012) and you must have secured a place on your chosen programme of study by the expected final decision date (16 March 2012). Applications with an outstanding admissions decision after this date, or applications which are re-evaluated against the later March deadline field, are not eligible for scholarship consideration.

You must also complete a Weidenfeld Scholarship Questionnaire and upload it together with your Graduate Application Form by the application deadline in order for your application to be complete.

If you do not apply in full by the deadline, you will not be considered for the scholarship, even if you have selected Weidenfeld Scholarships and Leadership Programme on the Graduate Application Form.

Millennium Youth Camp 2012 in Helsinki

Technology Academy Finland and the Finnish Science Education Centre LUMA organize the next Millennium Youth Camp to be held in Helsinki Metropolitan Region, Finland in June 2012. During this camp, about 30 talented and young people from different parts of the world will meet for a week to work together on different projects on mathematics, science and technology. These young people will also get a chance to meet famous scientists as well as the 2012 Millennium Technology Prize Winner during this event.

The Millennium Youth Camp is held on an annual basis, attended by students from all continents. In 2011, almost 1500 young people from a hundred different countries applied to take part. One of the camp’s primary goals is to encourage young scientists to network at an early stage in their careers and help them launch a career in science or technology.

During the camp, Millennium Youth Campers are presented with an overview of Finnish expertise and top-level research in the natural sciences, mathematics and technology. They are introduced to a number of Finnish companies and institutes of higher education. In addition to lectures, workshops and visits to Youth Camp partners, the camp programme includes project work supervised by top-level experts and carried out in small multi-national groups. The Millennium Youth Camp’s official language is English.

The week-long 2012 Millennium Youth Camp will take place in the Helsinki Metropolitan Region and start on 9 June 2012. Participation is free of charge. As in previous years, the project themes are climate change, renewable natural resources and energy, water, ICT and digitalisation, and applied mathematics.

Costs

Millennium Youth Camp is free of charge to participants! The organisers take care of all costs, including flight tickets and other travel and accommodation expenses.

Eligibility

Anyone born between years 1993-1996 is eligible to apply for a place in the 2012 Millennium Youth Camp. Applicants must have good English-language skills as the camp programme and all related material are only produced in English.

How to apply?

The application process has 2 phases:

In the first phase, young people from all over the world who were born between 1993 and 1996 are eligible to apply for a place in the 2012 Millennium Youth Camp using the online application form. Application deadline is December 18, 2011. The names of the 100 applicants selected for the second phase of the application process will be published on 1 February 2012, and they will be given a period of four weeks to produce project plans. Professor Quah is the head of Economics and acting chair of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Nanyang Technological University. A special session on the economics of innovation will be organized at the EBES 2012 Conference – Istanbul. The distinguished researchers, Marco Vivarelli, Pierre A. Mohnen, and Giovanni Dosi will join the session as invited speakers. Paper Submission

At least one author must be registered for each accepted paper to be included in the Conference Program. Registration fee is 250 Euros and 100 Euros for each additional paper. Accommodation is not included. Registration is required for all participants attending the conference. Registration fee includes the abstract book, the conference proceeding CD, and other conference materials. It also includes welcome reception, coffee breaks, and open buffet lunches during the conference.

The Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies - Harvard University’s center for interdisciplinary research and study of Russia and the countries surrounding it - is pleased to announce the theme for its 2012–2013 Fellows Program. The Fellows Program brings together scholars at early and later stages in their careers to consider a common theme spanning the social sciences and humanities. Professors Timothy Colton (Government) and Serhii Plokhii (History) will coordinate the 2012–2013 program. We are interested in applications from scholars currently working on our chosen theme, or equally those working on unrelated themes, but who are interested in exploring our theme. (Note that scholars whose work does not address the selected theme are encouraged to apply for fellowships at the Davis Center, and their applications will receive full consideration.)

Theme

The theme for 2012–2013 is "Imperial Legacies and International Politics in the Post-Soviet Space," constituting an examination of the international and transnational politics of the post-Soviet space in historical perspective. Areas to be explored under this theme include history, identity issues, security, political economy, and regime building in Russia, Ukraine, and other countries of the region. Other topics of interest include social and cultural factors such as migration, public health, religion, organized crime, environmental degradation, popular culture, and the mass media.

In addition to pursuing their own research, Fellows will participate in a bi-weekly interdisciplinary seminar series that will explore the theme. Papers will be presented by the visiting Fellows, Harvard faculty, and invited outside speakers.

Types of Awards

The Center offers three types of fellowships: Postdoctoral, Senior, and Regional. The maximum stipend amounts for these awards are detailed below. Scholars with outside or sabbatical funding who wish to be in residence at the Davis Center in 2012–2013 should apply using the fellowships application and indicate that they do not require Davis Center funding. If selected, they will join the Center as Postdoctoral, Senior, or Regional Fellows.

Postdoctoral Fellowships

-For junior scholars who will have completed the Ph.D. or equivalent by September 2012, but no earlier than September 2007 (less than five years).

-Stipend of up to $38,000.

-Citizens of all countries may apply.

Senior Fellowships

-For senior scholars who have already made a significant contribution to the field.

-Applicants will have completed the Ph.D. or equivalent prior to September 2007 and hold a full-time academic appointment.

-Stipend of up to $26,000 to bring salary to full-time level. In certain situations, if the stipend and the applicant's sabbatical pay are insufficient to cover necessary costs, the Davis Center may be able to provide additional funds.

-Citizens of all countries may apply.

Regional Fellowships

-For advanced scholars, policymakers, journalists, and other specialists.

-Stipend of up to $46,000.

-Citizens of Russia, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Caucasus may apply.

6th Annual Graduate Conference in European History

Paper submissions are welcomed for the 6th Annual Graduate Conference in European History - Transformation in European History - that will be held in Vienna, Austria, on May 3–5, 2012.

The “transition” of political systems in Southern Europe and Latin America since the 1970s and the revolutionary changes in Central and Eastern Europe in 1989/91 have resulted in the rise of “transformation studies” in social sciences. The term transformation is commonly understood as the politically steered transition from communist dictatorship to democracy, from a planned to a market economy, and from a closed to an open society. In contrast to this teleological reading the 6th GRACEH conference intends to explore a historical approach to transformation. A very broad working definition of the term would characterize transformation as a “period of especially intense and accelerated structural changes on a political, social, economic, and cultural level” that were caused by major political and social upheavals such as the breakdown of the continental empires in 1918, the French Revolution in the late 18th century, or the Reformation. Unlike the social sciences, we wish to broaden the application as far back as to the beginning of modern age. In what way can this concept of transformation be applied to contemporary, modern and early modern contexts? What kind of adjustments of the concept are required for the historicization of transformation?

The following three key aspects will serve as guiding questions throughout the conference:
■Which preconditions lead to periods of transformation? Which triggers, causes and turning points can be identified?
■On which levels does transformation occur? How can the complexity of transformation processes be analyzed without being trapped in teleological assumptions
■How is transformation perceived and interpreted by internal and external observers? How do transformation discourses influence the process itself?

The conference invites postgraduate and early career researchers in history and related disciplines to submit their papers dealing with this broad concept of transformation on the basis of textual and visual sources from the modern age onward. The proposals should consider and discuss political, social, and cultural dimensions, causes, evolution and perceptions of transformation. In order to enrich the discussion the GRACEH organizers have invited Gudrun Gersmann (DHI Paris/Universität Köln) and Christian Gerlach (Universität Bern) as external keynote speakers.

We look forward to receiving submissions on topics including but not limited to the following research areas:
■Continuity and discontinuity in transformation periods
■Agents of transformation
■Transfers and transnational dimensions of transformation
■Synchronic and diachronic comparative approaches for a history of transformation(s)
■Historical source material of transformation research
■Macro- and microhistorical approaches to transformation
■Legitimizations of transformation such as nation building, independence, liberty, and economical welfare, social movements, social network analysis, gender issues

The main conference language is English.

The conference has no registration fee. We offer logistic help to find good and low budget accommodation near the University of Vienna. A limited part of the travel cost for external participants can be covered on the basis of individual request (if you'd like to apply for a stipend, please provide documentation about your economic situation).

Master Grants from the University of Bern

The Universität Bern offers six Master Grants for the academic year 2012/13 for excellent international students. The grant consists of 1'600 CHF per month for the duration of the Master's programme (standard period of study). Application files will be examined by a selection committee. Criteria for selection are academic excellence and the candidate's potential and motivation.

Doctoral Program in International Business Taxation, Vienna

The Doctoral Program in International Business Taxation (DIBT) at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, Austria, offers an excellent doctoral education to outstanding students from all over the world, fully preparing them to conduct research on international business taxation. DIBT provides high-quality interdisciplinary training for graduates in the field of international taxation, including and combining the disciplines of public finance, international tax law and cross-border tax management.

DIBT focuses on high-quality academic education and internationally competitive research. It is aimed at the future elite of scholars and provides interdisciplinary training in taxation of enterprises‘ cross-border activities, drawing on and combining the core disciplines public finance, international tax law, and cross-border tax management. By then expanding tax training to non-traditional yet highly relevant disciplines such as economic psychology, history, political science, ethics, and legal philosophy as well as organizational behavior and decision making, a broadening of horizons and a more comprehensive approach to research questions is achieved.

The program takes three years to complete and awards a PhD degree to graduates. During the first year, participants acquire the basic knowledge necessary for working in an interdisciplinary manner. Building on this foundation, the second and third years are dedicated to seminars in related fields, a research stay abroad, additional optional workshops, and especially to doing research on a PhD thesis. For the duration of the entire program, students attend an accompanying research seminar. All courses are taught in English.

DIBT provides the opportunity to conduct research in the following areas:

Once admitted to DIBT, students can expect to obtain a top-quality education preparing them for a rewarding academic career or a highly specialized position in other, non-academic national or international institutions. The program is open to students from all countries, provided they hold a master or equivalent degree primarily in law, business, economics, psychology or, in exceptional cases, in other disciplines, if they have a sufficient background in taxation. Scholarships

DIBT is funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). Only a small number of students can be admitted. For DIBT Collegiates tuition fees are waived. Only in exceptional cases fees of about EUR 380,-- per semester have to be collected. However, these fees will be reimbursed from DIBT funds. There is a limited number of grants available to students in the amount of € 1,877 per month (tax and social insurance will be deducted from this amount). WU always goes the extra mile to provide an ideal research environment for the selected students.

GISP's unique design combines intensive French language courses with a series of lectures and seminars taught in English on subjects and issues relating to Geneva and its incredibly rich historical and contemporary influence. These include international law and international organizations, the intellectual and cultural history of Geneva, its importance on the scientific stage, issues of multiculturalism and plurilingualism and the present-day political, economic and social situation of Switzerland within Europe.

GISP has been designed as an interdisciplinary curriculum to respond to the needs and interests of students from abroad. In such a perspective, we have brought together experts in a variety of different fields, including European studies, international law, human rights, political science, economics, banking and finance, natural sciences, sociolinguistics, cultural studies, translation studies, English and French literature and enlightenment philosophy. GISP's faculty includes professors and lecturers from the University of Geneva and guests speakers.

In addition to lectures and seminars, the GISP curriculum entails visits to the most important international organizations based in Geneva. This allows students to engage with perspectives and approaches from outside the academic world and completes the overview of the offer provided by the University of Geneva's teaching programs. This "multi-voiced" program structure and pedagogical approach makes for an unusually enriching educational experience.

Application procedure

While it boasts of its specific insights in Law, Social Sciences and Humanities, the GISP is open to all undergraduate students with prior university experience. Students who already hold a BA are also encouraged to apply.

The program is NOT designed for students fluent in French or those from countries where French is a national language. However, admission requirements include basic knowledge of this language, as well as an advanced knowledge of English for non-native speakers.

- ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe) Level 4

-TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), a score of at least 550 points in the paper-based test, 213 points in the computer-based one or 97 in the Internet-based test (IBT)

Tuition fees (session 2012)

The GISP is a specific fee-paying program. Participation costs amount to CHF 2'800.- and include registration to the University of Geneva, French courses, participation to the GISP on-site activities, course material and the particular GISP framework.

The GISP is also open to nominated exchange students from partner universities at a reduced rate of CHF 500.-.

ALL applicants will be subject to the selection process of the GISP.

Once selected, students will be invited to make a down payment of CHF 250.- (deductable from the total cost and non-refundable) as confirmation of their participation to the GISP.

Prospective GISP students should note that the cost of room and board in Geneva is higher than in many other parts of the world. It is estimated at around CHF 2000.- per month.

GISP 2012 Award

Scholarship provided to the best GISP 2012 candidates

The University of Geneva awards two scholarships of CHF 6'800- for the best GISP 2012 candidates. Students must demonstrate appropriate academic merit and have the project of enrolling to a complete UNIGE Master program after the GISP.

The two scholarships are reserved for non-exchange students.

Application procedure and granting criteria
Students applying to the GISP 2012 Award must necessarily tick the corresponding box of the online application form and enclose the following documents to their application package:
- specific application letter (300 words, in English) stating why he/she should be elected as one of the recipient of the scholarship (giving full details about his/her academic project at the University of Geneva)
- two academic letters of appraisal
Applications will be evaluated by the GISP selection committee. GISP Award recipients will be informed about their acceptance together with the GISP acceptance letter that will be sent by mid-November.
A monthly amount of CHF 1000.- will be given to GISP Award recipients from mid-February to mid-June (= CHF 4000.-). The remaining CHF 2'800.- (corresponding to the GISP tuition fees) will be given at the end of the program, under the following conditions:
- Award recipient must have obtained all GISP ECTS Credits, i.e. successfully passed ALL GISP exams.
- Award recipient must have undertaken the procedure for enrolling to a Master program at the University of Geneva for the September 2012 intake.
GISP Award recipients will be charged the same tuition fees as the other GISP students.

The IHU offers a number of scholarships for the MA in Black Sea Cultural Studies programme, covering a significant proportion of the programme fees.

Admissions Process

The admissions process for Academic Year 2012/2013 is organized as follows:

January 25, 2012: Applications are submitted to degree programs.

Step 1: Pre-selection

Applications are evaluated on the basis of the applicant’s academic performance, work experience, recommendations, and expectations of the program and future plans.

Individual interviews may take place, face-to-face or by telephone, throughout the selection process.

After February 3, 2012: Pre-selection decisions are made available via the online application system. Successful applicants having applied to take any CEU-administered admissions examinations are notified of the testing arrangements by email.

Step 2: Testing

February 11, 2012: The CEU-administered TOEFL examination takes place.

February 11, 2012: Department-specific testing takes place:

Learning Arabic Language and Culture in Morocco

An Arabic Language and Culture session is a special activity that the Forum Communication des Cultures (FCC) organizes this year. The sessions will be held in Youssoufia/Rabat, Morocco.

The objectives of this activity are:

- Giving to people the opportunity to get basic knowledge about Arabic language and culture. That knowledge could be useful for him in their studies or in their daily life or in their travels in countries speaking this language.

- Giving the opportunity to people to get in touch with the Moroccan culture and its way of life, and in consequences achieve a fruitful cultural exchange.

- Giving the opportunity to people has some basic knowledge about this language to brush up it and be adapted to different ways to use it.

- Trying to connect Volunteers with friends from abroad so as to correspond between them in English or Arabic as a tool to promote their international understaning and knowledge and establish new friendship.

The courses are given by teachers’ members of FCC, who've got special training for this mission. Those teachers are flexible in managing those courses and are ready to cooperate with the participants so as to fulfil their expectations.

13 hours of learning courses per week are envisaged (Monday to Friday, morning from 9.30 to 12.00). The curriculum includes Arabic Culture, Calligraphy, Arabic language courses, Pronounciation.

At their arrival the participants will be given the FCC Arabic Language Guide.

The intercultural exchange sessions that will be organised during the Arabic program is an occasion offered by FCC to all the participants so as to present, exchange and discuss together the knowledge they got from the families.

Accommodation

The participants lodge and eat in families during the whole period. Staying with a family is a tool for FCC to give the occasion to the participants to use the Arabic language and also to discover the Moroccan way of life. All the participants are asked to respect the families’ environment and don’t behave against the local tradition; they are also asked to be sociable and are open mind so as to built good and fruitful communication with their members.

U-Active Forum: Networking for Developing Youth Projects

We are pleased to invite you to the first Forum of International Youth Projects, titled “U-Active: Networking for developing youth projects”. The Forum will take place on the 24-26 November, 2011 in Grodno, Belarus. The Forum intends to bring together interesting, initiative and active students all over Europe and let them exchange their ideas by providing informative sessions and learning opportunities with outstanding speakers who have a huge international project experience and a will to help us with idea and project generation.

This is supposed to be the Forum where there will be a chance to establish contacts with young people, share experience, find partners for interesting project ideas and probably for future social and business projects. U-active Forum idea has been developed by a group of students studying in Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno and acting in Youth-In-Club, nonformal group of students interested in developing and participating in international projects. “U-active” has a triple meaning: “you active”, “active youth” and “active University”. We are proud to welcome our delegates from all over Europe, especially those coming from our partner universities.

Each participant has to register for the U-Active Forum. The deadline for registration is 3th November, 2011. There is a recruitment process for all applicants. All participants will be notified by e-mail until 7th November, 2011. The information about participants will be also published on the web-page.

Registration Fee
There is also a registration fee for participants of the U-Active Forum.
Participants have to make a payment of:
- 20 EUR: all participants
- 70 000 BYR: Belarusian participants

Donations from participants should be made on their arrival at the registration point. Donations in Euro are accepted equivalent to Belarusian rubles on the day of arrival.

The IED Madrid School of Design is holding a scholarship competition for the European Master of Fine Art Photography. The competition is already open for participation and the deadline is November 24, 2011.

At this point in time, the European Master of Fine Art Photography is the most ambitious proposal for training in artistic photography, and aspires to be a meeting point for artists and professionals to enrich this field in Spain. The academic program, offered in Spanish and English, focuses on the creation of an artistic project and relies on international artists and theorists among its faculty, such as Martin Parr, Elger Esser, Alejandro Castellote and Joan Fontcuberta.

How to Pack for Studying Abroad

You’ve done the research, put in the time, taken the tests, secured the scholarships, gotten your passport and you’re on your way out the door and across the pond to a foreign country to study abroad. It’s romantic and daring and you’re almost completely ready to go except for one small detail… one minor issue that you haven’t even begun to tackle: packing. How on earth do you pack for a trip that is months long without taking your entire closet? Have no fear; there are a few different tips to help you pack sensibly for your upcoming adventure, and it doesn’t include every pair of shoes you own.

1. Bring an extra bag

It’s just silly to think that you won’t be buying things to bring back home with you. So, prepare ahead of time by bringing an extra bag with you so that you aren’t trying to cram all those trinkets you just had to have into the same bag you have to pack full of your clothes and shoes. Otherwise you’re going to have to make some important decisions about what to take home with you and what you can live without…

2. Take enough clothing for a week

Obviously you need the essentials: a couple pairs of jeans, shorts, shirts, socks, undies and jackets. You’ll need clothes for different types of weather, but that suede jacket or sequined dress can probably stay at home. Bring good walking shoes so that you can tour the city and a nice outfit for special occasions, but don’t go overboard and bring three pairs of nice shoes, three pairs of sandals, and three pairs of walking shoes… you’re not putting on a fashion show, you’re simply visiting another country.

3. Medications

Don’t leave home without these!! If there are any medications you regularly take make sure you bring them with you and that you have enough to last you the duration of your trip. You don’t want to be stuck in a situation where you need your medicine and can’t find it anywhere in the country.

4. Choose your extras wisely

There’s no point in bringing 15 different books with you unless you want to get in an upper body workout. By packing tons of books, movies, etc. you’re just adding a lot of unnecessary weight to your luggage and you probably won’t end up reading half of it – after all, you’re going to a foreign country to learn not to hole up in your room and read books. And don’t forget a camera and a journal of sorts to write down things you’ll want to remember!

5. Toiletries

While you should probably bring some toiletries with you, you don’t need to bring a supply that will last you the duration of your trip (unless, of course, you’re taking a very short trip). More than likely the country you’re going to temporarily live in will have some sort of toiletries you can purchase there and if they don’t you may want to rethink where you’re going… (kidding!)

In short, just make sure you have what you need to survive, but don’t pack your entire life away. If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a million times – less is more. And if you find you need more clothes or you forgot something, shopping is a great way to tour a new city!

To facilitate access to Master’s degrees by students with qualifications from foreign universities, the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, makes available around ten Master’s grants which are awarded on a competitive basis. Please read below to learn more about the application process for 2012.

Programmes concerned

Candidates must choose a Master's programme from among those offered by the UNIL, except the Master of Medicine, Master of Arts in Public Management and Policy, Master of Arts in Sciences and Practices of Education. The grant may not be used for any complementary studies required to enroll on the Master’s degree and may not be used for EMBAs or Masters of Advanced studies.

Amount and duration of the grant

The amount of the grant is CHF 1,600.- per month from 15 September to 15 July, for a duration not exceeding the regulation minimum period of the programme (according to the programme, one-and-a-half years or two years subject to deduction for paid placements or exempt semesters, if any). Abandonment of the programme results in suspension of the grant.

Required conditions

The candidate must be the holder of a degree from a foreign university.
The qualification held by the candidate must be deemed equivalent to the UNIL Bachelor’s degree.

Selection procedure

Candidates complete the "UNIL Master’s Grant" form and submit their application to the Office for socio-cultural affairs (SASC, Unicentre, University of Lausanne, CH-1015 Lausanne, info.sasc@unil.ch) by 15 December 2011 at the latest. The application is examined by the University Rectorate to determine whether the candidate is admissible. In the event of a positive decision, the application is forwarded by the SASC to the UNIL Faculty responsible for the Master’s on which the candidate wishes to be enrolled. The Faculty selects applications and notifies the SASC of its opinion based on the candidate’s qualities, motivation and suitability for the Master’s programme. The SASC forwards shortlisted applications to the selection committee which will award grants to students meeting all criteria according to the available budget.
Decisions are not open to appeal.

Selection criteria

The grants are intended more particularly for students who distinguished themselves in their university studies and who have difficulty meeting their financial needs for the duration of the Master’s. It is however necessary that the candidates have sufficient financial means to support themselves during the complementary studies that may be required prior to enroll on the Master’s degree.

Your parents have taught you the basic rules of being safe right? Or at least you have heard them somewhere. Always look both ways before you cross the street. Never get a ride from a stranger. These are rules that you probably grew up learning. But, now, as you are getting ready to go to college, or if you are already there, especially if you study abroad, there are some safety tips that you should abide by when in college. College is a great place to make friends that will last your whole life. There are also people that you may want to steer clear of. Because college is where a lot of people want to “experiment”, keep yourself safe. Avoid situations where you could possibly get hurt. You want to enjoy our college experience to the fullest, you don't want it to be marred by placing yourself in a compromising position.

These are basic safety tips, but will really help keep you safe.

10 Ways to Stay Safe in College

1) Lock your apartment doors

This is a very simple rule that most college students should always follow. In college, people like to leave their doors open so they can come in and out. What most people don't realize is that they are also inviting strangers to come in and out. Always lock your apartment doors, no matter how much it may feel like a hassle. When your neighbors are robbed because they left their doors open, you'll be thankful that you locked your doors. An extra 5 seconds to lock your doors will prevent you from getting anything stolen.

2) Keep your keys safe

This is just as important as locking your doors. It is very easy for people to make copies of keys and give them to people to use to get into an apartment. You don't want extra copies of your keys floating around. You will also want to keep your key safe, don't loose it. Put it on a lanyard or a keychain so you don't misplace it.

3) Lock your laptop

You don't want anyone to steal your laptop, get a lock for it. You'll be glad you did.

4) Stay with a buddy

The buddy system will never fail. Stay with friends to stay safe.

5) Know the number of campus security

If you need a ride home, call campus security.

6) Listen to your gut

If a party just doesn't seem like a good idea, don't go. It's ok to spend a Friday night every once in a while at home.

7) Carry cash

If you need to take a cab for a quick getaway back to your apartment, it is always good to have cash on hand.

8) Make sure someone knows where you are

Tell your roommates that you are going on a date, or what party you are going to. It is always good someone knows where you are.

9) Take a self defense class

With the electives that you can take, make the best of it and take a self defense class. You will learn valuable skills to keep yourself safe.

10) Stay on a well-lit path

If you are walking at night, because you are coming back from a party or even work, make sure that you keep yourself safe by staying on the lit path. Keep your head up and don't be afraid to look people in the eye. Even if a darker way is quicker, it is always a better idea to just take the extra time and go on the lit path. People are less likely to do something to you where everyone can see what is going on.

If you follow these tips, you can stay safe and avoid a lot of issues that come up when you are in college. You want college to be the best years of your life, by using these tips, you will stay safe and enjoy your college experience to the fullest.

The Schwarzkopf-foundation is looking for young people from Europe between the ages of 18 and 26, (i.e. in 2012 the prize winner should not be older than 26) who are imaginative and active in an honorary capacity engaged for the European understanding and integration.

Young people prepared to grasp the opportunities of our time in forging peaceful coexistence in a Europe of diversity. Each year with this prize the Schwarzkopf Foundation rewards a young European for his/her outstanding commitment to fostering international understanding and the union of Europe.

At the same time we want to encourage and motivate these young people to continue to champion these ideals. The sum donated for the prize is € 5.000. This amount is intended to finance a six-month internship with a Member of the European Parliament or another European institution. It is also possible to use the sum to finance a project which promotes European integration. That person should like working with children and teenagers and have communicative command of English language.It would be also perfect if person is experienced in writing grants application and fundraising. Euro Belgrade 2011 is an international student sports tournament that is organized by the Faculty of organizational sciences from Belgrade (Serbia) and supported by the entire University of Belgrade. It will take place from 14th to 17th of October and during those four days students will have the opportunity to play futsal, volleyball, basketball or waterpolo during the day and party in the night. All of the games will be played at one place, in a sport complex that is positioned in a forest called Kosutnjak (the very heart of Belgrade nature) which many people find as one of the most beautiful green parts of the city.

When you come here, besides playing sports, we will take to you visit some of the most attractive and famous Belgrade sights because our wish is to make you feel as pleasant as you can. Studying abroad brings many benefits. It's a good way to experience the wider world and to become a well rounded person who can get along with anyone. But the first time you head off to a foreign study centre or university you might find it a bit challenging. The best way to get a lot from the experience is to integrate yourself fully into the culture. Here are some tips for doing just that.

Learn the language

With hundreds of languages worldwide one of the options is studying abroad is a country where your native tongue is not the primary mode of communication. This is not for everyone and you have to decide whether your language skills are adequate for taking instruction in a different language or whether you will follow a course in your native language and spend the rest of the time getting to know the local language.

One option, especially if you already know some of the language, is to do an immersion language course before you start your proper program of study. This will get you up to speed with the new language and, with the help of a good dictionary, you will be able to understand what people are saying and communicate adequately.

Even if you already speak the language you might find that what you learn in books does not match up with what you hear on the street. Check out a book or an online course which gives you access to the latest slang so that you can sound like a native speaker from the beginning. And once you have improved your language skills you will be ready for phase 2 of the plan.

Learn the customs

Knowing local etiquette is crucial to your success as an international student. You need to know what behavior and forms of address are appropriate for particular circumstances. Find out from books, websites and your own observations how to greet people (or say goodbye), how to enter and leave people's homes, how to behave at the dinner table and more. These can vary widely around the world and you'll make a good impression if you have taken the time to find out what to do. And you can always ask -- most people are willing to help those who are new to the country.

Shadow the locals

One of the mistakes that some foreign students meet is to hang out only with their friends who already speak the same language. This might be comfortable but you won't get the most out of your study abroad experience. Instead make friends with local students. See where they hang out and go to the same places to broaden your social circle and your cultural knowledge.

Accommodation

While you could stay in the provided student accommodation, depending on your location it could be a good idea to find an apartment somewhere that is more integrated into the local community. Even better, pick a roommate who doesn't speak the same language as you do. That means that your new language will become the common one and you will quickly get to grips with it. This will also help you to integrate more with the local community and really get a lot out of studying abroad.

Get to know the culture

Instead of following the well trodden tourist trails, you can get your new friends to give you an insider's view of what is really worth seeing in the vicinity and around the region. When you get back home you'll be able to amaze your friends and family with your specialized knowledge of a place they may only have seen in the guidebooks.

Once you follow these tips you will really get the most out of studying abroad. Most people find that it gives them a greater appreciation of world cultures, exposure to people and situations that they would otherwise have missed and new language skills. All of these come in handy once you have finished your course and move into the working world.

The Centre d’Etude de la Vie Politique (CEVIPOL) of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences and the Institute for European Studies (IEE) of the Université libre de Bruxelles are organizing an international conference “Europeanization : Do we still miss the big picture?” on March 29 and 30, 2012 in Brussels.

Description of the Conference

The concept of Europeanization can be considered as a tremendous success in the field European Studies of the last 20 years. Already early on the number of approaches to analyze how and “when Europe hits home” has multiplied. While this variety certainly is a strength, it runs a methodological risk: no common definition of Europeanization has been found and more precisely the danger of conceptual stretching occurs. Meanwhile, the first generations of definitions have been abandoned due to their conceptual proximity to concepts European integration, but more comprehensive definitions imply again the complexity of processes of Europeanization and mutual impacts of Europeanization and European Integration.

This development points at a complex facet of europeanization research: do we want to limit ourselves to use Europeanization as the explanans for change? Is it not also necessary to explain Europeanization itself, i.e. treating it as the explanandum? Instead of assuming that we find a linear process in either direction, shouldn’t we take into account that processes of construction, diffusion and institutionalization do not necessarily follow a stringent or coherent pattern? Furthermore it is questionable that these processes will have the same impact on the ‘classical’ 3 P’s of Political science: policies, politics and polities.

We still seem not to know a lot about the black box of the national and subnational level, i.e. how actors deal with the EU’s direct and indirect impact every day and the relationship of Europeanization and European Integration.

Do we still miss the big picture of Europeanization? Is such a picture desirable? Or does it become much more of a mosaic given its plethora of analytical approaches? Hence a discussion on research methods and case selection is needed as the emphasis on complexity runs the risk of losing the analytical capacity to determine causality in Europeanization.

This conference will try to develop answers to these questions by dealing with the above mentioned complex processes of Europeanization:

o Do we still miss the “big picture” of Europeanization?

o How can we improve theory in Europeanization studies?

o What methodology for opening the black box?

o How do complex processes of Europeanization relate to European integration?

The conference structure will follow this threefold focus of attention with three panels:

Traineeship at European Centre For Modern Languages

The European Centre For Modern Languages (ECML) in Graz, Austria, has been offering traineeships since 1997. The scheme has proved a highly successful means of developing further contacts between the Centre and its member states. Recruiting young professionals from all over Europe to join its team for a short period both reinforces the Centre’s role as a place of international cooperation and promotes an atmosphere of intercultural learning. For the trainees it often represents their first experience of an international organisation. The scheme which the ECML now offers is the result of a learning process and is adapted to meet the needs both of the Centre and the trainees themselves.

Duration & Traineeship Areas
The ECML offers traineeships, lasting in general 6 months, twice a year. According to their field of interest applicants can choose the main area in which they would like to be involved (although the tasks will cover a wide variety of areas):
- organisation of events and meetings;
- documentation and resources;
- the Centre’s website;
- finances and general administration

Eligibility

Trainees should be graduate students preferably at postgraduate level. They should be plurilingual (English, French, German) and have adequate writing and computer skills as they will frequently be asked to translate official documents.

Allowance

Trainees receive an allowance from the Centre of approximately 686 Euros per month. This allowance is transferred by the Council of Europe at the end of each calendar month, i.e. if the trainee starts work on 1 July the payment will not arrive until 31 July. As this can be problematic at the start of the stay, particularly when a deposit and payment in advance is often required for accommodation,you will be offered a support facility to ensure that new arrivals do not have financial difficulties as a result of their traineeship.

A contribution of a maximum of 230 Euros is made towards travel costs from the trainee’s home country to and from Graz. Any travel invoices should be therefore be kept. Normally the reimbursement is made in two instalments – in the first and last month of the traineeship, together with the monthly allowance.

In order to apply for the traineeship, you should fill in the application form and then upload it here. You are asked to describe your language skills in accordance to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. With tuition on the rise nearly everywhere and the global economy still stuck in the mud, many students are turning to scholarships to help cover college costs. And really, who wouldn’t want free money?

But, how do you actually get your hands on this free money? Keep reading for our 10 tips on how to improve your chances of getting a great scholarship.

1. Earn good grades in high school.

You don’t need a 4.0 to get a scholarship, but decent grades sure help. If it’s between you and an equally-qualified finalist, your grades can give you the edge you need. So, put your best effort into your high school classes.

2. Volunteer locally.

Scholarship committees love students who are active in their communities. Pick a cause you care about and invest your time into it. This will help build your resume, too.

3. Talk to your guidance counselor.

Some scholarship committees send information and application forms straight to high schools. Ask your guidance counselor what’s on file.

As a bonus, the more you build your relationship with your guidance counselor, the more likely they are to write you a letter of recommendation if a scholarship requires one.

4. Contact the colleges you’re thinking about attending.

If you already have a list of colleges you plan to apply to, contact them and ask what kinds of institutional scholarships they offer. If you get accepted into a few of your top choices, the availability of scholarships and aid at each could help you narrow it down.

5. Use free scholarship search engines.

There are plenty of free scholarship search engines online, so pick a few and set up a profile on each. One good option is the College Board’s Scholarship Search. A completed profile on this and other search engines helps you find the scholarships that are right for you.

6. Give local scholarships a chance.

Ask local businesses and organizations about scholarships for students in the community. Local scholarships aren’t as competitive as national ones because there are fewer applicants. See if your parents can ask their employers about this, since some companies have scholarships available for children of employees.

7. Apply for small scholarships, too.

Some students don’t bother with scholarships that offer fairly small amounts of money, like $100. Well, think of it this way: if you spend an hour getting the application materials together and an hour writing an essay, then you win the scholarship, you just made $50 per hour. Trust me, you’ll be glad to have it when you see how much your college textbooks cost!

8. Don’t apply to scholarships for which you aren’t qualified.

It sounds obvious, but some students just apply to lots of scholarships and hope they get lucky. It’s much better to find a few scholarships that are a good fit for you and put your best effort into applying for those.

9. If you need letters of recommendation, ask early.

Many scholarships ask for letters of recommendation from people who know you well, and not always academically. Once you decide who you want to write a letter of recommendation for you, ask them as early as you can. Think of one month’s notice as the minimum. Show them the scholarship criteria and provide your resume. If they agree to do it, send them a handwritten thank you note.

10. Get a head start.

You should start researching scholarships during your junior year of high school and applying to them at the start of your senior year. It takes time to get a quality application together; rushing to meet scholarship deadlines will only make your senior year more stressful. Starting now could save you time and money later.

Now that you know how to improve your chances of getting a great scholarship, you’ll be better prepared to tackle those applications. Remember, you don’t have to be a straight A student to earn a scholarship. There are scholarships that are right for you out there. You just need to find them, put together the best applications you can, and hope for the best.

7th UNESCO Youth Forum

UNESCO offers young journalists and bloggers the opportunity to participate in the 7th Youth Forum of the 36th UNESCO General Conference, taking place in Paris from 17 to 20 October 2011. Journalists and bloggers who are selected to attend the 7th UNESCO Youth Forum will be able to network with youth delegates from 193 countries, with key members of international organizations and with non-governmental organizations.

A young blogger from each of UNESCO’s five constituent regions (Africa, Arab States, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and North America & Latin America and the Caribbean) will be selected.

Established in 1999, the Youth Forum has become an integral part of UNESCO’s highest decision-making body - the General Conference. It brings together young delegates from all over the world to exchange views, share experiences and identify common opportunities and challenges

Youth journalists and bloggers have three roles: Firstly, they will ensure internal coverage of the Forum through blogs, articles, video clips, radio coverage and other relevant mediums. Secondly, they will be responsible for reporting news of the Forum to their regional and local communities, networks and organizations. Thirdly, they will accompany the action of youth delegates in implementing the recommendations of the Forum in the regions.

Kosovo Youth Atlantic Treaty Association is organizing professional training on “Negotiation and Protocols” in Durres, Albania on 1 – 6 November 2011. This course will develop your understanding of the principles, strategies, and tactics of effective negotiation and professional relationship management. You will also increase awareness and understanding of ethical principles and stakeholder considerations that influence the choices offered and made in transactions and relationships.

You will learn to identify and assess the variables in negotiations, develop sound negotiation planning techniques, develop an understanding of various strategies and tactics to use as you ethically resolve conflicts, transactional and interpersonal differences. Learn how to use that knowledge to execute effective dispute resolutions, and improved competence to manage professional relationships.

The course methodology is highly participative and utilizes class discussion, assigned readings, and simulations in one-on-one, fishbowl, and group situations. Tools for effectively planning for negotiations are reviewed and implemented. Students will work with other class members, in and outside of class, to plan group negotiations.

The objective of this training is to provide students a broad understanding on the historical development, the security, social, political and philosophical dimensions of the negotiations and protocols.

Target Group

Students with different academic backgrounds and a general interest in Euro-Atlantic integration will benefit from each other in an intercultural and interdisciplinary learning process. Former classes consisted of regular students and practitioners such as civil servants, communication experts, young politicians and even parliamentary officials.

The course does not require special knowledge about negotiation policies, European politics, law, history or culture, but participants should be interested in more than just their field of specialization. In class participation, especially in the discussions with experts, is essential for the course success and plays an important role in grading.

European Media Work Exchanges

The MARS programme builds upon previous actions and recommendations made by Council of Europe bodies regarding media pluralism, diversity, fight against discrimination, and intercultural dialogue. Regarding the wide range of media productions, it will focus, though not exclusively, on sport media coverage. If Sport is a major field of investment for the media production and is an important area for building social cohesion, it can be a source of tensions between groups, communities, or even nations.

By working with all the media actors and by making them work together, MARS offers a way of exchanging and fostering intercultural dialogue between the various groups of the public within the media reach. In this sense, the MARS programme wants to foster mutual understanding, to counter stereotypes and to reduce discriminatory and racist attitudes.

To go towards achieving this outcome, the MARS programme is offering media professionals (journalism students and trainers, journalists, media managers, etc.) the opportunity to participate in European Media Work Exchanges.

The MARS Media Work Exchanges are a unique opportunity for media professionals, and future ones, to widen the scope of their media practices and contact pools.

Media professionals will have the opportunity to host a media colleague/counterpart and be hosted themselves by a media related organisation in return (training organisations, media, self-regulatory and regulatory bodies, professional unions… ) to exchange professional experience and to produce together with the participating colleague, a common output (training exercises, media reports, case studies, etc.).

To help with the process, the Council of Europe will provide participants the financial and logistics support to travel and work with European Union colleagues in 10-day work exchanges (5 days as guest / 5 days as host).

Where can you do your Media Work Exchange ?
In any of the 27 member states, apart from your own state, knowing preference will be given to participants coming from priority countries chosen by the MARS joint programme. UniCredit & Universities Foundation launches a new competition for 8 grants "UniCredit Study Abroad Exchange Programme" aimed at all university students of economics or finance for a period of six months of study exchange programme abroad to/from Serbia and Russia.

To be eligible for the competition, applicants must be a citizen of one of 22 countries where UniCredit is present and be a university student in the fields of economics or finance in at least her/his 2nd year of study.

Moreover, candidates must:

1) either be enrolled at any university in a country in which UniCredit is present and be wishing to spend six months at a university located either in Russia or in Serbia
or:
2) be enrolled at a university located either in Russia or in Serbia and be wishing to spend six months abroad at any University in a country in which UniCredit is present.

The grants are aimed at financing exchange periods abroad for six months, starting from January 2012 and ending March 2013.

Each winner will receive a grant of EUR 4,200 (gross of taxes) for the whole period and an economy return flight ticket will be fully paid by the Foundation.

Candidates may only apply using the application available online. In the application, each candidate must indicate a list of maximum 3 host-universities where she/he intends to spend the exchange period, choosing only those universities with an exchange agreement already signed with the home university.

"Fixing a hole – closing the gaps in democracy!" is an international seminar organised by JEF-Europe and JEF-Finland in Helsinki, the capital of Finland from 22 until 28 October 2011.

To which extend and how is Europe’s youth involved into the democratic procedures on the local, regional, national, European and global level? How can the decreasing demographic weight and a lowering democratic participation be addressed? In which extend do the conventions and charters on rights promoted by the Council of Europe promote the democratic empowerment of young generations? Which is the contribution of youth work to the development of social responsibilities?

The participants of the seminar ‘Fixing a hole – closing the gaps in democracy’ will study and try to find the answer to these questions. In a dynamic exchange with elected representatives and youth leaders at local, national and European level, participants will have the possibility to understand differences within Europe and between our continent and the rest of the world and exchange good practices. Participants will study in which extent different legal, educational and communicational measures can promote youth participation and youth representation in society at local, national and transnational level and promote democratic and social inclusion.

The working methodology is based on a combination of non-formal and formal education methods and on a strong interaction with democratic and civil society representatives. A ahole day will be dedicated to a simulation of an international decision-making process. The seminar will also provide a range of leisure activities in the city of Helsinki enjoying the rich European history and culture this city has to offer.

“Impossible is Nothing: Reporting on Human Rights and International Conflicts” workshop for young journalists. Apply before Aug. 15!

How do you create balanced reports from conflict zones where things can change in a matter of minutes? How do you know who is telling you the truth? How can journalists get their facts right? What is the relationship between media coverage and human rights in such conflicts? If these are questions that interest you then we invite you to apply to become one of the 60 young journalists, aged between 18 and 30, reporting from inside the European Parliament in Brussels on Oct. 18-20.

Participants will experience three days of creativity and innovation through political discussions, hands-on media workshops and invaluable insights into the European Parliament and the European media. They will interact with high-level European politicians, professional journalists and experts and engage in intercultural exchange through practical work and evening cultural activities. Over the course of the three-day workshop, each young journalist will produce a report on the topic of the seminar through their medium of choice - audio, video, print, online or photography.

The workshop is organised by the European Parliament and the European Youth Press and is open to citizens and legal residents of the EU member states.

Travel will be reimbursed by the European Parliament. Accommodation and board will be covered through a lump sum also provided by the European Parliament. The European Youth Press aims to ensure the participation of young journalists from all 27 member states.

Call for Applications to MEdiT’11. Apply before Aug. 7!

In October 2011, the European Youth Parliament Finland hosts MEdiT’11 - a convention gathering over 30 young committed individuals for five days to discuss, experience, and shape future ideas about using media in intercultural youth dialogue and the role of the media in non-formal learning. The aim of MEdiT’11 is to gather, revise, and disseminate knowledge and best practices in this field. Between 26th and 30th of October the participants will engage in an open space format to share and learn about topics they find important and inspiring. Each participant acts as a learner and as a trainer. In this way, the sharing of knowledge and best practices as well as the needs of the participants are brought to the fullest. Additionally, there will be inputs from external experts and excursions. The convention will be held in the Happi Youth Media Centre in Helsinki, which provides excellent facilities for working with all types of media (desktop publishing, internet, video, audio) and space for constant group facilitation and evaluation to support the learning process.

The target group of MEdiT’11 are young people active in intercultural youth dialogue and exchange and have already experienced non-formal learning and have used media as a supportive tool. This event is especially designed for members of the European Youth Parliament and the European Youth Press. However, members from other organisations are welcome to participate.

“East for South - Development Awareness from the Roots” (E4S) enables the brightest young journalists from the EU’s 12 new member states (Malta, Cyprus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Bulgaria or Romania) to produce high-quality reports on EU development policy in general and the EU commitment to the UN Millennium Development Goals in particular. Each media report should boost awareness of these issues in its home market. In each round, 10 students from new EU member states work with 10 journalists from sub-Saharan Africa. Each African/European team investigates a story related to challenges and opportunities of humanitarian cooperation - on the ground in sub-Saharan Africa. Experienced media professionals from DW-AKADEMIE prepare the teams for this project. After the field trip, professionals supervise the post-production of high-quality reports for TV, radio, print and/or online. The project is designed as an extracurricular activity for which students will get a certificate, as well as the final reports they produced. In total 30 European students will take part in E4S. Grants fund investigative journalism. Apply before Aug. 15!

Investigative journalists can apply for a reporting grant. The grants, sponsored by the Fund for Investigative Journalism, are intended to support investigative projects around the world. The average award is US$5,000, which should cover out-of-pocket expenses such as travel costs. The Fund does not cover grantees’ salaries or equipment. The first half of the grant is given once an application is approved and the second half is paid when the project is complete. Recent grants include investigations on the BP oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, the chocolate trade, Moment Magazine, for an investigation on discrimination against Jews in the U.S. Army Corps, and the Daniel Pearl Project. All proposals must be submitted in English and include a detailed budget.

Rebellious Media Conference in London in October

A conference on media, activism and social change will take place on Oct. 8-9 in London. Noam Chomsky will give the keynote address at the Rebellious Media Conference. Other confirmed speakers include documentary maker John Pilger ("The War You Don’t See"), blogger Laurie Penny, radical publisher and activist Michael Albert (ZNet) and journalist Johann Hari (The Independent). Organizers are currently drafting the conference program, which will comprise roughly fifty small workshops and eight larger sessions. 5 Ways to Enjoy Your Study Abroad Experience Even If You're Homesick

For many of us, going abroad is a wonderful experience. In fact, the majority of study abroad students have a wonderful time living abroad, meeting new people, and studying in new academic settings. However, the majority of study abroad students also deal with varying degrees of homesickness.

The key to overcoming homesickness is to accept it as a part of living abroad and then to figure out ways to both treat it and also compartmentalize it. By this I mean that homesick students should learn to understand what homesickness truly is, which helps them better appreciate their own 'normal' life situation, and then they should use their homesickness as inspiration to make the most of their time abroad. Here are five ways homesick students can overcome homesickness in order to better enjoy their experience abroad.

Establish a Routine of Contact with Your Home

The most important way to overcome your homesickness is to discipline yourself when it comes to contacting your family and friends at home. If you call them every time you get homesick, then you're going to have an expensive habit and you'll also just exacerbate the problem. Homesickness is a result of being away from your comfort zone, so if you continue calling home, you'll never learn to be on your own. Regularly scheduled calls home can help you live week to week. If you can make it to the next phone call, you'll be okay.

Make a List of Goals Abroad

Homesickness also arises when students don't feel as though they have a purpose in being abroad, or they have lost focus as to why they went abroad in the first place. If you make a list of goals to accomplish while you're abroad, you'll have something to work towards, which will help keep your mind off of the reasons why you feel homesick.

Keep a Journal

You don't always want to repress you homesickness, however, so if you keep a journal, you can create a safe place to reflect upon your homesickness. Writing about your homesickness and your experience as a student abroad is important because it gives you an opportunity to grow as a person: you can examine your values, how you act on your own, what you miss about your comfort zone, and so on. This helps you prioritize what is most important to you later in life.

Socialize Regularly

Whatever you do, don't let yourself wallow in bed. Part of going abroad is socializing with other people, especially other people of different cultures. Make new friends. Get to know your host country's population. This will get you out and about, it will expose you to new things, and it will keep you from being too sad.

Earn Good Grades

Finally, throw yourself into your studies. Yes, you're abroad to meet people, have fun, and see new things, but you're also abroad to continue your education. Your grades are really important, so you should take advantage of this new academic environment to learn what it's like to be a true student in a new and foreign academic situation. If you regularly keep up with your students, then you'll have less of a chance of feeling homesick and sorry for yourself.

International Youthcamp 2011

International Youthcamp2011 will take place on 12-14 August 2011, in Ballerup, Denmark. Active young people from all over the EU will meet to jointly develop ideas, debate democracy and establish networks across geographical borders. The activities at the Youthcamp will strengthen the young people in their work developing projects for and with young people in their local area, and engaging other young people in the democratic decision-making processes.

The camp consists of a series of workshops, where Danish and foreign presenters talk about e.g. inter alia, international political cooperation, project development and youth participation. The camp also offers social and cultural events, such as film, music, swimming, video art, song writing and much more. As a participant in the camp you will help to shape the camp and its contents.

Youthcamp Organizer Group consists of young people from Fingal in Ireland, Nacka in Sweden, Adalar in Turkey and Ballerup in Denmark.

The personal goals for the participants of the camp are to:

LEARN IT – share knowledge and experiences!
SHARE IT – create networks and relations!
DO IT – participate in social and cultural activities!

The underlying and bigger goal of the camp is to tell the world, the political leaders and the people around us that young people have dreams and ideas and want to express their opinions and to get their voices through to the political leaders.

Eligibility

Youthcamp2011 participants must be between the ages of 15 and 25 when the camp is held (12-14 August 2011). The Youthcamp is for young people, who have some experience with the democratic process through youth projects, youth councils or youth organizations.

Conditions for participation

Participants younger than 18 years must be accompanied by an adult or a leader over 18. The name of the leader must be provided on the registration form.

It is possible for several people from the same project, youth council, etc. to attend. If you attend as a group, the group’s other participants must be included on the registration form. If you attend as part of a group, it must be stated who is responsible for the group on the registration form.

Accommodation, food and activities

Youthcamp2011 provides accommodation, food and water for the participants free of charge. Activities described in the Youthcamp2011 programme are also free for the participants, but they must pay for OFFSITE activities requested which are not offered by Youthcamp2011.

Transport and travel costs

You are responsible for your own transport to and from Copenhagen Airport/Train Station, a mini-bus will be provided to collect you and transport you to the camp. Instead many young people seem to turn away from politics and the participation in social discussions, obtain less information from newspapers and rather visit chats and forums.

This development poses big challenges for politics as well as for journalism. Nowadays, media producers (regardless of the genre) are also faced with the question of how to reach people - how to encourage them to read their news and editorials?

These issues will be addressed at the four-day-long M100 Youth Media Workshop that takes place in Potsdam on 21 – 26 August 2011 for the 7th time this year.

During the workshop, targeted at young journalists and emerging editors between the ages of 18 and 26 from all over Europe, various questions will be pursued and analysed:
1. What are the options to reach poorly educated and politically distant social groups via media and to engage them with political topics?
2. Are there approaches and examples to solve these problems in the participants’ home countries? If so, elaborate.
3. Does the issue have a high significance in the participants’ home countries and how is it dealt with?
4. Are there studies about the proportion of poorly educated social youths in the participants’ home countries’ population?
5. How do the participants aim to reach this particular target audience with their journalistic work?

Aim of the workshop is to use the diverse experiences, backgrounds, ideas and visions of the participants from many different countries to create a wide-ranging view on the topic for the whole of Europe. Based on their shared knowledge, methods and a precise format will be developed during the workshop to tackle the issue of how the various media can reach poorly educated and politically distant social groups and generate their interest in political topics.

Prior to the workshop the selected participants will be asked to exchange ideas, experiences and research as well as start to discuss different approaches in a blog.

Conditions for participation:

Young journalists between 18 and 26 years old from all over Europe can apply with a short text in English (three pages max.) on the topic Youth and politics in my country – how journalism can reach poorly educated and politically distant youths.

Following questions should be included:
1. How serious is the issue in your country?
2. Is it considered to be a problem?
3. Are there approaches on how to solve the issue?
4. Do you think journalists/ blogger/ media producers have any possibilities to reach poorly educated and politically distant social groups?

Please include a brief CV and motivational statement in the application that state the reasons for applying to this particular workshop. The workshop will be held in English.

The organisers of the M100 Youth Media Workshop cover accommodation and board during the workshop. A travel allowance of up to 250 € is provided for.

20 to 25 participants will be selected from all applications and invited to Potsdam from 21st (arrival) to 26th August 2011 (departure). The workshop is supported by the City of Potsdam, Federal Foreign Office, the ZEIT Foundation, Bertelsmann AG and Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg; co-operation partners include UFA, Intajour - International Academy of Journalism, European Youth Press and the German Commission for UNESCO.

European Youth Media Convention 2011 - "Whistleblowing - A New Competition for Journalists?"

Journalists are facing competition: Platforms like wikileaks reveal scandals, allow unprecedented insights into political strategies, and begin to impinge on the role of the journalist. Apparently, the public receives an additional level of control and knowledge.But is unconditional transparency of political systems, that so-called whistleblowers usually strive for, always beneficial for democracy? And how should journalists respond if they want to prevent a takeover of their distinctive role?

During this year's European Youth Media Convention, which will take place between the 3rd and the 6th of August in Berlin (Germany), we will try to find answers to these questions and outline the future for young media makers. Participants will have the opportunity to meet up with 39 other young media makers from all over Europe and outline the situations of their own country.

You can attend lectures and discuss with experts. In addition, you will get the chance to produce journalistic print-, video-, audio- or photography content according to your interest at the event.

Costs

There is no participation fee. Free board and lodging is provided. Travel costs are not reimbursed.
