How International Students Can Find Scholarships

Education is expensive, but very often, it’s worth every penny you spend on it as long as you’re able to find the job of your dreams, one that you love and one that pays well. And when you travel overseas to find the best education possible, you know that affordability is going to be a deciding factor in your decision to stay on or return home. While most international students settle for student loans at exorbitant interest rates, there are a few who are savvy enough to research their options and apply for and secure a scholarship. It’s not an easy task to find international scholarships because there are so few of them, but it’s not impossible if you set your mind to it.
  • The first place to look for international scholarships is in your home country – search for scholarships and low-interest loans that are offered by government agencies, local business organizations, and charitable foundations.
  • Check the sites of international humanitarian organizations for scholarships that promote cultural exchanges between the USA and other countries of the world.
  • If you belong to certain ethnic groups, you may qualify for scholarships that are meant to help and support your community’s progress.
  • International scholarships are also available for students who have chosen certain courses of study, so if your major is one of these, check to see what you have to do to qualify.
  • Some colleges have programs to foster student communities that are culturally, economically, socially and geographically diverse; so they award scholarships to foreign students who meet their standards. Check to see if your chosen school has such a program or if you can gain admission to any other school that does.
  • Some colleges offer international scholarships for exceptional sportspersons or athletes, so if you have the necessary skills, apply for these.
  • Your chances of securing an international scholarship are better at individual schools rather than state universities.
A few tips that come in handy when you’re searching for an international scholarship:
  • If you’re a graduate student, you stand a higher chance of securing a scholarship because there are more available for international students. It’s easier as graduate and teaching assistantships and fellowships are offered to students with proven academic records.
  • However, do remember that some schools may offer fellowships and assistantships only to students in their second year of study.
  • The earlier you start your search, the more likely you are to taste success.
  • You’re not likely to get your student visa unless you’re able to show how you intend to finance your education abroad, so start looking and applying for scholarships early.
  • Scholarships may cover only the cost of tuition; so be prepared to handle the expenses for room, board, books and other miscellaneous items on your own.
  • Check with the financial aid offices of colleges and universities to assess your chances of securing a scholarship before you make an decisions based on assumptions and hearsay.

The Eastern Partnership and the Future of EU Engagement

Chatham House in partnership with the Robert Bosch Stiftung, St Antony’s College (Oxford University) and the European Commission invite young specialists from Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine) to apply to participate in a new project assessing the European Union’s policy towards its Eastern neighbours. Successful applicants will be invited to attend a two-day programme of events in London and Oxford on 16 and 17 March 2011. Participants will be invited to share their ideas on the future of the EU’s Eastern Partnership with leading experts from across Europe. All travel and accommodation will be covered by the project organisers.

Background

The Eastern Partnership was launched in 2008 at a challenging juncture for the European Union's relations with its eastern neighbours. The Russo-Georgian conflict forced the countries on Russia's periphery to look hard at the regional and geopolitical environment and reconsider the relative attractiveness of increased engagement with Euro-Atlantic organizations. The context has been further complicated by the global financial crisis, which shifted attention in EU member states both inwards, to domestic concerns, and further outwards, to questions of global governance reform.More than ever the EU has to make the case to its neighbours of the importance of open markets and transparent government, and that prosperity and security are best achieved through convergence with EU norms. With Poland, one of the initiators of the Eastern Partnership, assuming the EU Presidency in July 2011, this is an opportune moment for a re-evaluation of EU policy objectives and approaches in the region.

Programme

This project aims to provide an opportunity for young specialists and future leaders from the EaP countries, based in think tanks, public administration, the media and academia. The project will provide an opportunity to exchange ideas on EU policy with leading experts and policy-makers from across Europe. Participants will increase their knowledge of EU policy to Eastern Europe and build contacts with specialists from all parts of the continent. One applicant from each EaP country will be chosen to participate in an expert seminar entitled ‘The Eastern Partnership and the Future of EU Engagement’, to be held at Chatham House in London on 16 March 2011. On 17 March, participants will attend a programme of lectures, meetings and discussions on the future of the European Union with international relations experts at St Antony’s College, Oxford University. In addition, one applicant will be invited to write a Chatham House Briefing Paper on the future of the Eastern Partnership. This will be published by Chatham House and made available on the website (see below).

Eligibility

· Citizen of Eastern Partnership country (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine);
· Background in International Relations, Social Sciences or Economics;
· Track record of research on the former Soviet Union and EU relations with Eastern Europe or the South Caucasus;
· Excellent English writing and oral presentation skills;
· Under forty years old.

Requirements

All successful applicants will participate in a seminar at Chatham House on 16 March 2011 and a programme of lectures and discussions on the EU at Oxford University on 17 March 2011. Applicants may be asked to provide short presentations at the conference, or act as a discussant in panels. Applicants can also apply to write a peer-reviewed Chatham House Briefing Paper (8,000-10,000 words) on the future of the EU’s Eastern Partnership. This will be organised separately on the basis of the applications submitted, and an honorarium will be paid.

Application

Please apply by sending your CV, a cover letter, a publication sample and a proposal for a presentation or research paper on an aspect of the EU’s policy towards its Eastern partners. This can focus on the EU’s policy to a single Eastern Partnership country or the region as a whole. Proposals should be a maximum of 500 words. Please indicate in your cover letter if you would also like to be considered for the Briefing Paper. Applicants to write the briefing paper must provide a broad regional focus in their research proposal.

All travel costs and accommodation for participants will be covered by Chatham House.

Human Security and Migration Litigation Workshop in London

INTERIGHTS' Europe Programme covering Council of Europe countries within Central and Eastern Europe and former Soviet Union is pleased to invite applications for a strategic litigation workshop on "Human Security and Migration" which will be held in London on 27-28 January 2011. The workshop is open to lawyers and human rights activists engaged in legal advocacy from Council of Europe states, especially those from Central and Eastern Europe, the Baltic States and the Caucasus. To ensure a fruitful in-depth discussion, only a limited number of places will be offered.

Throughout the region, migrants - in particular, undocumented/irregular migrants, unskilled migrant workers, and asylum seekers and refugees – are vulnerable to a wide range of human rights abuses such as ill-treatment, arbitrary detention, servitude and forced labour, denial of access to justice, interference with private and family life, and denial of access to medical treatment and social services.  Moreover, due to their non-citizen (often irregular) status, migrants can be denied or severely restricted in their access to legal redress both in theory and practice.

The workshop's objectives include:

- facilitating cooperation and exchange of ideas and experiences between local lawyers and human rights defenders who are engaged in litigation and other forms of legal advocacy related to human security in the context of migration;
- achieving a better understanding of the nature and scale of violations occurring in this context;
- examining legal strategies to address those violations, including the identification of applicable legal standards and appropriate international, regional and national legal fora;
- increasing the capacity of participating lawyers and NGOs to litigate abuses of human rights in the context of migration at international and regional level, especially before the European Court of Human Rights;
- improving INTERIGHTS' understanding of the legal challenges existing in the field of human security and migration and the ways in which we can participate in addressing them;
- nurturing cooperation between INTERIGHTS and local lawyers and NGOs on the thematic issues identified below.

Elibigility

As an organisation focussing on strategic litigation, we are primarily interested in applications from practicing lawyers who have experience of representation and legal advice in cases involving serious violations of human rights of migrants or victims of trafficking.  However, we also wish to encourage applications from non-lawyers or non-litigating lawyers who are directly involved in protecting the rights of migrants. We shall prioritise applications from lawyers and activists working in Central and Eastern Europe (including Russia and Ukraine), the Baltic States and the Caucasus. In exceptional cases, however, applications from Western Europe could be accepted as well.

We are especially - but not exclusively – interested in applicants who have an experience of working on any of the following areas:
(a) treatment of asylum seekers and refugees, including issues arising under Articles 2, 3, 5, 6, 8 and 14 of the European Convention of Human Rights, such as violations of the right to life, the non-refoulement principle in the context of expulsions and deportations, unlawful detention, ill-treatment in detention, inadequate procedural guarantees for detainees or persons subject to transfer, such as denial of access to a lawyer, and discrimination in the application of immigration rules;
(b) prevention of trafficking and human beings and protection of the human rights of victims of trafficking, including in the context of transit countries and countries of origin;
(c) treatment of migrant labourers/undocumented migrants, especially issues arising under Article 4 (e.g. exploiting their vulnerable position to deny remuneration or provide grossly inadequate remuneration for their work; coercing into work by withholding their identity papers or deliberately failing to regularise their legal status); and Articles 2, 3 and 8 (e.g. poor health and safety standards at work, a lack of access to health care).

To ensure that the workshop reflects current and emerging trends in the identified area and is practical use to the participating lawyers, all applicants are asked to submit the description of a relevant case they have worked/are working on. The workshop's agenda will be shaped by the legal issues arising out of the cases submitted by the selected participants.

Funding

All reasonable travel and subsistence costs associated with attendance at the training will be covered by INTERIGHTS.

The workshop will be held in English with simultaneous interpretation into Russian. Therefore, it is essential that participants are proficient in either English or Russian.

To apply, please email a completed application form to Arpi Avetisyan, Legal Team Coordinator, at aavetisyan@interights.org. The deadline for applications is Sunday, 12 December 2010

For further information, please contact Yuri Marchenko at ymarchenko@interights.org.
