Weimar Summer Courses

This year Weimar Summer Courses will be held under the general topic "The Cultural Dimensions of Sustainability" on 26 June – 10 July 2010.

We are living in a time of incredible ecological and social change. The destruction of life-supporting ecosystems, the extinction of species, exploding poverty, suburban sprawl and ever-higher energy consumption are calling us to act. The action needed demands new understanding and new competences. Not least, the world requires of us the depth of humanity to meet the scale and complexity of the challenge. To develop a sustainable society, we need to engender greater humanity and a stronger connection to our world while simultaneously furthering our understanding of the complexity of the current crisis.

The Weimar Summer Courses 2010 addresses these topics from different points of view. In an intercultural environment with participants from all over the world we will discuss social, cultural and aesthetic approaches towards sustainable development.

The Weimar Summer Courses will take a cross-sectoralapproach to the overall topic. The main aim is to draw on historical experiences and theoretical approaches to discuss current problems and further the development of sustainability.

Two parallel courses will address the general topic, each of them emphasising a specific dimension:

- Course A: From Goethe and Schiller through the Bauhaus to Social Sculpture. Forum for Creative Action: The Shaping of a Humane World as an Aesthetic Challenge.

- Course B: Cultivating Sustainability in Self, Community and Place.

The total course fees are 750 Euro and include accommodation in a double room, board and participation in the course programmes and excursions. Accommodation in a single room is also possible at a surcharge of 150 Euro.

The participant’s card allows free entry to Weimar’s museums, the art collection, libraries and archives.

For students and participants without income of their own, the course fee can be reduced to 500 Euro on application if appropriate proof is provided.

In the case of particular financial hardship, a limited number of scholarships are available providing support for the greater part of the fees. Participants need only contribute 250 Euros.

Youth Exchange in Romania

Do you feel concerned by environmental issues? Do you like photography as a way to express yourself? Did you ever think about combing both interests? 

Pro Eco Scientia and Citizens of Europe invite you to take part at the youth exchange project "Environmental Pollution. Shoot it! Frame it!" organized from 21 to 28 March in Oradea (Romania).

Matching artistic and scientific approaches, techniques of photography and non-formal learning processes about the effects of pollution, this exchange is a wonderful opportunity to improve our knowledge and raise our awareness on environmental issues!

Objectives of the event:
• learning about the effect of pollution on the environment
• learning photography techniques
• promoting proactive attitude and raising awareness on environmental issues
• photo exhibition on environmental pollution
• getting to know Oradea and the surrounding areas

Eligibility: Participants have to be aged between 18 and 25 and living in Germany, to take part in this project. 

Accommodation and food are fully provided. Travel costs will be covered up to 70%.

We already started to select our participants, and there are still two places available!

Summer School on Interest Group Politics

Summer School on Interest Group Politics under the topic Mobilization Processes and Interest Group Communities will be held on 30 June - 8 July, 2010 in the University of Antwerp. The program is intended for  PhD and master students.

The Summer School on Interest Group Politics is a new initiative of the ECPR Standing Group on Interest Groups. Three schools, to be organized in 2010-2011-2012, aim to provide students of political science and public administration sound knowledge about these organized interests and their impact on public policy making.

The Department of Political Science of the University of Antwerp will host the first summer school in 2010. It focuses on the population ecology of interest representation as well as the professionalization of interest groups. The proximity to an important international venue when it comes to interest groups – Brussels – enables to include practitioners and to bring a visit to the EU institutions in Brussels. The summer schools in 2011 and 2012 will be hosted by the University of Virginia (US) and the Agder University (Norway).

The course includes lectures and discussions led by well-known scholars in the field. Examples are drawn from both national and European politics. Furthermore, attendees receive constructive feedback on their own research on aspects of interest groups politics. Invited scholars for the 2010 school include David Lowery, William Maloney, Dirk De Bièvre, Arlo Poletti, Anne Rasmussen, Caelesta Poppelaars and Jan Beyers.

The summer school is open to PhD students, research master students and master students from political science, public administration or related areas. A limited number of practitioners can participate as well. A basic requirement is that all applicants should have completed introductory courses in political and administrative sciences at the BA-level.  

The course will be taught in English, so participants must have a good command of English. 

   

Fees. The program fee is € 750 and has to be paid within 30 days after confirmation. The fee includes accommodation, lunches, course material and the social programme. Attendees will be responsible for their own transportation costs to and from Antwerp University. 

A limited number of scholarships are available on request.

Participants will be selected based on a letter stating their motivation to take part in the summer school, two references, a short CV, and a paper proposal (maximum 2 pages) to be discussed during the summer school. ECPR Summer School in Methods and Techniques

The 5th ECPR Summer School in Methods and Techniques will take place at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana from 30 July - 14 August 2010. This year topic is Social Science Methods: Between Unity, Diversity, and Complementarity.

A solid training in methods is the fundament of successful research. A researcher should know what a method does, how it works, and how it should be applied, but also what its potentials and what its limits are. Hence methods training is a tightrope walk between the perils of overconfidence in a method's capacity and underestimation of its potential.

The ECPR Summer School in Methods and Techniques provides ECTS accredited up to date training in specially selected methods in the whole spectrum of approaches used in the social sciences. In particular, it emphasises those methods which are particularly salient for research questions in political science broadly defined. It deals with all stages of a project, it caters to the needs of research set at the macro and at the micro level, and it covers quantitative and qualitative designs.

Disrespecting traditional divisions of the discipline, among which the quantitative/qualitative and the analytical/interpretive polarity are the most prominent, the Summer School fosters dialogue between various persuasions. To this end, besides the courses (refresher courses, two week courses and one week courses), "openings" to other methods, evening presentations and debates on contentious methodological issues, with the input of the participants themselves, are also offered.

ECTS Credits

Participants have the opportunity to gain ECTS credits from the University of Ljubljana. Certificates of accreditation are sent to students after the Summer School has ended.

In addition to such ECTS credits (if applicable: see rules below), each participant receives, before leaving the Summer School, a certificate of attendance for each course attended.

Refresher courses: No ECTS credits are granted for these courses (only a certificate of attendance). There is also no formal exam.

Main Courses: To obtain the full five ECTS credits available, participants must successfully complete their course, which includes a project assignment and an exam (on 14 August). Those particpants who do not sit the exam can still obtain three ECTS credits by successfully completing the project assignment. Those participants who only sit the exam but choose not to complete the project assignment can obtain two ECTS credits.

Accomodation is paid by the participants.

Doctoral Scholarships for Candidates from Developing Countries

With support from its “Special Research Fund” (BOF), Ghent University is able to finance doctoral scholarships for candidates from developing countries who wish to obtain a Ph.D. at Ghent University. No restrictions are imposed on the field of research, nevertheless preference will be given to topics that are relevant for development. Relevance for development measures the degree in which the action of development corresponds with the expectations of the beneficiaries, the needs of the country, global priorities and the policies of partners and donors.

There are two types of scholarships: full grants for starting PhD students and grants with a maximum duration of 1 year for students finalizing their PhD research at Ghent University.

Type 1: Grants with a duration of 2x2 years for starting PhD researchers

This type of grant is intended for new PhD researchers who want to obtain a PhD degree at Ghent University.

Duration

There is an initial period of two years, which can be extended by an additional two years, depending on the evaluation of the progress report.

Who can apply?

The candidates must come from - and must also possess the nationality of – one of the countries on this list.

How does it work

The candidate applies to Ghent University jointly with a promoter of Ghent University. The Research Council makes a selection of the applications based in part on the recommendations obtained from members of the Council for Development Cooperation. The recommendation is based on the evaluation of the doctoral project, the qualifications of the applicant for the doctoral scholarship and the scientific/scholarly potential of the promoter’s research group(s). The development of the research potential of the institution can also be taken into account in the evaluation.

How much funding is involved

The value of the scholarship depends on, a.o., the researcher’s family situation. The monthly allowance is approx. € 1,545.

Deadline: March 22, 2010.

Type 2: Grants with a maximum duration of 1 year, for finalizing PhD research at Ghent University

This type of grant is for PhD researchers who have already carried out a substantial part of their PhD research and who need maximum 1 year to finalize their PhD.

Duration

The grant can be either 6 or 12 months.

Who can apply

Candidates must come from - and must also possess the nationality of – one of the countries on this list. They also must prove that the doctoral research they have done so far, is clearly linked to Ghent University, meaning that previous collaboration with Ghent University must exist (please see the call for more information).

How does it work

The same application and evaluation procedure as for the type 1 grants is followed, with the exception that the feasibility to finalize the doctorate within the time span of the requested grant will also be taken into account for the evaluation of the applications.

University of Warwick Summer Law School

Applications are welcomed for the summer school organized by Warwick Law School from 5 to 10 July 2010. The summer school will bring together doctoral students from law, women's studies,  politics, sociology and anthropology (or appropriate disciplinary backgrounds) working on interdisciplinary gender and law issues in relation to development. Five fully funded residential places are offered for doctoral students studying in the UK with interests in this area who would like to contribute to the school..

The nucleus of the Summer School will be provided by MPhil/doctoral students at SEARCWL, UZ and Warwick University (although a limited number of doctoral students presently studying in the UK with interests in this area are also invited).

The focus for the Summer School is on developing methodologies and analytical frameworks for research on gender and law within diverse plural legal contexts with particular reference to Southern post colonial and European multicultural societies. It is research student focused and seeks to expand the skills of doctoral researchers in the area of gender and law. It will lay the foundation for future networking and collaboration. A 

number of leading external contributors, including international scholars from Africa, Norway and the UK with expertise in the area will be present and make contributions.

People Like Us: A 1 Day Conference

Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survey Research invites to attend a 1 Day Conference "People Like Us", which will be held on Friday, April 16, 2010, at Manchester Conference Centre. 

This free to attend conference will examine and discuss the origins and implications of ethnic concentration, or ethnic density. Four sessions will cover key topics, each with two papers, a response from a discussant and plenty of time for broader discussion among the conference attendees, who will include academics and those working in the policy arena from central and local government and from NGOs.

The conference is organised by CCSR and ISC at the University of Manchester, the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, UCL, and the Department of Health Sciences, University of York. International Youth Meeting in Georgia

All interested and qualified persons are invited to apply for the International Youth Meeting “Fighting Against Racism and Intolerance: Shared Agenda for Shared Future” to be organised on 20-26 April, 2010 in Georgia by Union “21 Century”.

The central focus of the meeting will be around the current needs and challenges which young people face nowadays in terms of the intolerance and racial discrimination and the perspectives lead by/for young people in this field. The meeting will give the space for a wide exchange of different visions, approaches, experiences, intercultural backgrounds and the meeting will try to come out with concrete outcomes, joint actions and shared vision on what has to be done for addressing the racism and discrimination at different levels.

The meeting will bring together 25 young people representing the Council of Europe member states. Young people will represent organisations and/or religious communities. They must have experience in the field of hate motivated violence, anti-racism and anti-discrimination activities, etc.

The requirements for participation are:
• Working experience on human rights issues, priority will be given those working on the problem of hate crimes, anti-racism and anti-discrimination projects.
• Be active at their local/national and/or international level;
• Be highly motivated to participate and contribute to the meeting and be prepared to represent the activities
and the work of their representing organisations/structures/ communities to the participants of this meeting;
• Aged between 18 and 30 (exceptions could be made based on justification). There will be 25 participants coming from the different CoE member countries;
• Be available and committed fully to attend the meeting;
• Good level of English is requested in order to participate actively in the meeting;

Selected candidates will be contacted by the 15 of March, 2010 and they will receive the convention information packs.

The Oxfam International Youth Partnership (OIYP), “a global network of young people who share a vision of a just world and are committed to working for peaceful, equitable and sustainable social change with their communities” is inviting applications for its 2010-2013 program.

OIYP is open to young people from 18 to 25 years old speaking fluent English or Spanish, of all nationalities, indigenous and ethnic groups. It is open to young people with any level of education and who live in rural or urban areas. We aim to recruit equal numbers of young men and women. We have a strong focus on the participation of Indigenous young people and those marginalized in their communities.

Between 2010 and 2013, you will have opportunities to develop your skills, knowledge and understanding and to talk and exchange with other young people from around the world. You will be able to use these opportunities to support your work with your community. This will be launched with 8-day Kaleidoscope event to be held in New Delhi, India in November 2010 where young people from different parts of the world will be able to interact with each other. Selected candidates for the program should ensure that they are available to attend this event.

Seminar on Market Freedoms and Fundamental Rights

Jean Monnet Chair of European Public Law of the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Law organizes International Seminar on Market Freedoms and Fundamental Rights which will be held on April 18-25, 2010, in IUC Dubrovnik.

The Seminar is aimed for:

- undergraduate and graduate students of law

- doctoral students and researchers

- junior public servants

A limited number of travel and subsistance grants will be offered to participants presenting a research paper. Deadline for submission of abstracts (500 words) is January 15, 2010. Selected candidates will be invited to submitt the paper in Dubrovnik. Deserving contributions will be published in the Croatian Yearbook of European Law & Policy. There is a possibility to participate in the seminar without presenting a paper.

Applicants from non-EU European states who want to take part at the conference (without paper) may be elegible for IUC grants. Such applicants should submitt the grant application form and submitt it to the IUC directly.

CEU Summer University

Established in 1996, CEU's Summer University program hosts high-level, research-oriented, interdisciplinary and innovative academic courses as well as workshops on policy issues for professional development in the social sciences and the humanities.

The summer school is a meeting place for academics and professionals, eager to look beyond their disciplinary boundaries. During SUN everyone particularly enjoys the exposure to this immense diversity, of countries, disciplines, views, and perspectives. Discussions are encouraged and conducted in an atmosphere of tolerance and intellectual curiosity.

Courses involve distinguished international faculty (including CEU professors), and excellent advanced doctoral students, junior or post-doctoral researchers, teachers and professionals as participants. While application from all over the world is encouraged, continued priority is given to applicants from Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and countries experiencing emerging democracies worldwide. Applicants from these countries, when admitted on merit, will be eligible for scholarship, while those from developed countries will usually be expected to pay fees.

Course offerings cater for the various needs of academic and professional development across a wide spectrum of disciplines. These include anthropology, cultural studies, environmental sciences, comparative religion, political science, public policy, sociology, international relations, legal studies, etc. The program encourages topics in newly emerging fields and transdisciplinary approaches.

The program is unique in its diversity of faculty and student body as well as its academic offerings. It brings together groups of interested individuals to study together intensively for two or three weeks in Budapest coming from an enormously varied geographical, cultural and academic background.

Participants have been accepted into the program from 107 different countries ranging from East and Central Europe and the former Soviet Union to countries of Asia, Africa, North America and South America.

The courses are taught by a team of teachers who also represent a wide range of countries in an effort to match the diversity of the student body.

Professors have come from approximately 62 different countries from the region as well as mostly from Western Europe and America. This exciting multi-cultural composition of the courses provides a stimulating environment for engaging participants and faculty in an inspiring and enriching dialogue during the summer school.

The summer courses are primarily targeted at graduate students, junior or post-doctoral researchers, teachers and professionals.

Heinrich Boell Scholarships

The Heinrich Böll Foundation awards scholarships to German and foreign students in keeping with the guidelines provided by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Federal Foreign Office (AA).

Deadline: 01/03/2010

Open to: students who are enrolled at state-recognized institution of higher education in Germany

Funding/scholarship: depends on income and personal assets

Eligibilty: the scholarship is awarded to German and foreign students ( from EU and non-EU countries).

Students, who did not gained their university entrance qualifications from a German school must be already enrolled at a state-recognized university or college (e.g. Fachhochschule) in Germany.

Three stages are involved when the Heinrich Böll Foundation selects applicants for its scholarships:

International Conference "Dialogue of Languages, Cultures and Civilizations"

The Department of Slavic and Balkan Languages of the School of Foreign Languages, University of Tirana, Albania, in collaboration with the Trakya University, Edirne, Turkey, organize an International Conference "Dialogue of Languages, Cultures and Civilizations". The event will take place on 8, 9, 10 April 2010 at the School of Foreign Languages, University of Tirana, Albania. Master in Economics and Finance at CEMFI is a 2-year full-time program intended to prepare students for a wide range of careers in the public and the private sectors. It also serves as the first two years of the PhD in Economics at CEMFI. This flexibility is very attractive to many students that initially are not sure whether they would like to follow a professional or an academic track. The program is taught in English.

 

The distinctive feature of the program is the combination of an orientation towards applied and policy issues with a strong emphasis on analytical and quantitative approaches to these issues. This requires a solid understanding of the relevant economic, econometric, and computational techniques. The faculty teaching the courses are all active researchers at the frontier of their area of expertise. About 25 students are enrolled each year, which allows for close interaction with CEMFI’s faculty.

 

The Master in Economics and Finance at CEMFI is an official degree granted by Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo (UIMP) according to the regulations of the Spanish Ministerio de Educación.

Each academic year is divided into three 10-week terms. Courses are concentrated in the first five terms, with three courses per term. Each course comprises three hours of lectures and one and a half hours of problem set classes per week. The sixth term is fully devoted to research work on the Master thesis that students must submit at the end of the program. In addition, a 2-week introductory course of Mathematics is taught in September of the first year.

The first two terms contain the core courses, while in the next three terms a wide range of elective courses are offered. The electives are grouped into four areas of specialization: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics, and Finance. The choice of electives does not have to be concentrated in one of these areas, so students can decide their own degree of specialization.

In the summer between the first and the second year students are offered a Summer internship at a financial institution, a consultancy firm, a public sector department, or collaborating as a research assistant for a project of a faculty member.

In addition, from the second to the fifth term there is a workshop in which students present and discuss applied economics papers and debate papers on economic policy issues. Throughout the year there is a series of invited lectures and several series of research seminars that students regularly attend.

 

Tuition fees

The tuition fee for the Master in Economics and Finance 2010-2012 is EUR 3,600 per year. This figure may be adjusted by a limited amount, following regulations of the Spanish education authorities.

Exemption from tuition and scholarships

CEMFI may grant students exemptions of the tuition fee and/or scholarships for living expenses amounting up to EUR 10,000 per year. Exemptions and scholarships are granted according to academic merit. Some of this support is funded by a set of sponsoring institutions.

 

Applicants of the Master are also encouraged to apply directly, well in advance, for other scholarships for graduate programs. Institutions awarding scholarships to Spanish, and some also to non-Spanish, students are: Banco de España, Fundación la Caixa, Fundación ICO, Fundación Rafael del Pino, Generalitat de Catalunya, Gobierno Vasco, and the Spanish Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y Cooperación, Ministerio de Trabajo e Inmigración (Becas Reina Sofía).

After enrolling in the Master you can also apply for a scholarship from the Spanish Ministerio de Educación.

Scholarships for Latin American students

The Fundación Carolina, in cooperation with the Fundación BBVA, has endowed four scholarships for Latin American students of the Master. The scholarships amount to EUR 1,200 per month for housing and subsistence, over 19 months, plus 2 additional months for those students who participate in a Summer internship program. The scholarships cover the cost of a roundtrip tourist-class ticket from the student's country of residence and medical insurance (excluding prescriptions). They also cover the Master's tuition.

 

The application form should be filled out electronically. Once filled out, the online application form should be submitted, including files for:

• Applicant’s photograph.
• Official transcript of grades obtained in undergraduate studies.
• Official transcript of grades obtained in graduate studies (if applicable).
• Proof of knowledge of English language.
• GRE scores.
• Any other documents.

These documents must reach CEMFI by 5 April 2010. A first round of decisions will be made for applications arriving by 5 February 2010.

Youth Forum 2010 – Young Adults 4 New Results

Climate change is a global challenge that concerns young people as much as it concerns the older generation. Climate change already has an impact on the daily lives of hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, destroying livelihoods, exacerbating conflict and claiming lives. Nowadays, we can no longer solve the climate challenge separately from each other, be it across nations, across religions, across sectors or across generations. It is of the utmost importance that we as the young generation have a real say in the climate debate and take action!

On 28 June – 1 July 2010 the Global Humanitarian Forum (GHF), a Geneva based international organization personally led by Kofi Annan, will host its second annual Youth Forum entitled Youth Forum 2010 – Young Adults 4 New Results. Youth Forum 2010 will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, and the overarching title of the event will be “Generations Taking on the Climate Challenge”.

Youth Forum 2010 will be held simultaneously and interlinked with the GHF’s high-level centerpiece event, the 2010 Forum. Consequently, attendees of Youth Forum 2010 will engage in dialogue and interact with GHF’s high-level participants.

During the four days of Youth Forum 2010, you will have a chance to:

- Share your expertise, experience and knowledge with interesting young adults from all over the world

- Engage in true intergenerational dialogue with high-level personalities from across global society

- Participate in discussion rounds, plenary debates, workshops and brainstorming sessions

- Listen to leading young guest speakers from various sectors

- Develop new and action-oriented initiatives with the help of a high-tech idea development tool

- Enjoy Geneva and its environment through our various social activities… and legendary parties!

150 committed and active international young adults between the ages of 18-30 will be selected as participants through an entry-competition that opened on 1 February 2010. The deadline to submit your application is 1 March 2010.

We are looking for young people from many different backgrounds! It does not matter if you are a scientist, a musician, a politician or a cook, a young professional or a student. If you are interested in the overarching topic of the event, then we are looking for you!

Christine Mirzayan Graduate Fellowship Program

The Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program currently accepts applications for the Fall 2010 session.

The Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program within the Policy and Global Affairs Division of the National Academies is designed to engage its Fellows in the analytical process that informs U.S. science and technology policy.  Fellows develop basic skills essential to working or participating in science policy at the federal, state, or local levels. 

Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars and those who have completed graduate studies or postdoctoral research in any social/behavioral science, medical/health discipline, physical or biological science, any field of engineering, law/business/public administration, or any relevant interdisciplinary field within the last five years are eligible to apply.

During the program, fellows engage in studies and activities throughout the National Academies. Some examples of projects fellows conducted include developing:

• An outline of themes of leading research in remote sensing applications;
• A workshop on how scientists in developing countries can take better advantage of the new wireless communication networks to gain access to the Internet;
• A background paper on the current state of knowledge about the demography of street-children, and on what is known about the cost and effectiveness of existing programs to help street-children and orphans in the U.S. and abroad.

The program is open to all US and non-US citizens who meet the criteria. However, you must be currently enrolled in a US university and have proof of holding a valid J-1 or F-1 status. If you are accepted into the program, copies of your immigration documents will be required immediately.

The Fellowship stipend/grant for the 12-week program is $8,000. It is intended to offset living expenses for the period and not intended as a way to earn money. Travel expenses will not be reimbursed.

The stipend is paid out in two check installments.  The first installment (50% of the session stipend will be sent to each accepted fellow approximately 2 to 3 weeks after the Fellowship Program Office receives the executed agreement form acknowledging intention to participate in the program.  The second installment (remaining 50% of the session stipend) will be paid out to each Fellow during the first week of the program.  More information will be provided upon acceptance.

Economic Talk 2010

Students from G4 countries - Chinese, German, Japanese and US students plus participants from other countries have the opportunity to participate in a 6-day workshop with well-known representatives from the car industry, within the program "Economic Talk 2010", from 22 to 27 March in Tokyo, Japan. 

Participants: About 60 students from China, Germany, Japan and the US, basically between 18 and 30 years of age. Students from other countries may be included as representatives of their country. Representatives from car industry (Daimler, Honda, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Volkswagen, etc.).

Goals of the event:

1. To understand not only the present situation but also the future
2. To identify economic issues and needs for action for the future

3. To create economic opportunities for our future

4. To develop our responsibility for the future

5. To provide students with a milestone for their future

6. To enable students whose major is not relevant to develop economic sense.

Participants will need to create their future both personally and professionally. First, they need to understand the present (2009/2010) and the future (2020) through 1-year and 10-year forecasts, respectively. Second, economic issues and needs for action will be identified through ET topics and subsequent discussion. Third, participants create career or business opportunities for our future by talking about industries (2010: workshop on car industry). Fourth, participants develop personal and professional sense for responsibility through the discussions, talks and presentations in the program. Fifth, through the program experience including real and virtual networking among participants, students are provided with a milestone for their future both personally and professionally. Sixth, student participants irrespective of major will be enabled to develop economic sense.

Working language: English.

Participation fee: 30000 Yen (about 330 USD). Reimbursement of travel costs may be provided if organizers obtain program funding.

World Urban Forum, Brazil

UN-HABITAT is looking for young people aged 15–32, from all over the world, to help capture the youth perspective on issues of urbanization at the upcoming World Urban Youth Assembly and World Urban Forum in Brazil, March 19-20, and March 22-26, 2010.

You must be highly literate in English, with outstanding writing skills and the capacity to absorb, analyze and organize large quantities of information from diverse perspectives, and to prepare coherent and informative reports. You must be actively engaged in youth-led development activities focused on sustainable urbanization, and have a commitment to being an active part of crafting solutions to the many challenges posed by urbanization, especially those impacting youth.

How to Apply:

Prepare your responses to the following four questions, respecting the word limits indicated for each question. Your responses will be judged on coherence and organization of thought, relevance of content, and accuracy (including spelling and formatting). Your answers must be typewritten and in MS Word or PDF format, and emailed to the contact person indicated below.

If selected, you will be expected to source funding to cover your travel to and accommodation at the Youth Assembly and Forum. International Novruz Festival

AEGEE-Baki – European Students' Forum Baku Public Union - invites you to apply for the International Novruz Festival, which will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, on March 15-22, 2010. 

Novruz is the most favourable Holiday in Azerbaijan which is dedicated to the early spring. International Novruz Festival in Azerbaijan (INFA) is the annual celebration of Novruz with the guests from all around the world. 

This project will give you a unique chance to experience different parts of Novruz holiday, such as jumping over bonfires and running through the streets, banging on pots and pans with spoons and knocking on doors with your hats and bags to ask for little presents (sweets and candies) and tasting national cookeries, such as shekerbura, pakhlava, goghal that you have never had before! Another essential part of this festival is a chance to visit the capital of Azerbaijan Baku – the city of centuries – old history, ancient traditions and modern reality became known as “Paris of the East”. Profile of participants: this event aims to bring together 60 motivated participants in the age of 18-30, who are interested in culture and ancient traditions.

Financial conditions: there is a participation fee of 50 Euros. This fee covers the following costs:
